The Pirates are coming off a weekend series versus the Marlins. Pittsburgh won the first three games of that set 6-5, 7-2 and 9-3. In the Sunday finale, the Pirates fell behind 5-0 early but eventually rallied for the 9-7 win in 10 innings. Pittsburgh’s Rowdy Tellez bagged a three-run homer in the seventh inning, and Bailey Falter lasted 4.0 innings with six earned.
In the starting pitcher role for Monday’s game, the Pirates will go with Marco Gonzales. Last year Gonzales went 4-1 overall with a 5.22 ERA in 10 starts. He posted 34 Ks in 50.0 innings total. Gonzales is 65-49 in his career with a 4.14 ERA in 163 games (155 starts).

In the Sunday rubber match, Washington took a 6-5 loss despite leading 3-1 after the fourth inning. Lane Thomas managed three RBI in the defeat. Trey Lipscomb posted a solo homer with two runs and two hits as well.
It’ll be MacKenzie Gore in the starting role for the Nationals on Monday. Last season over his 27 starts, Gore went 7-10 with a 4.42 ERA alongside 151 Ks in 136.1 innings. Gore has a career record of 11-14 with a 4.45 ERA in 43 games (40 starts) total.

Pirates vs Nationals Prediction
I’ll probably stick with the Pirates here. On Sunday Pittsburgh got themselves into trouble early with that five-run first inning. Things quieted down after that, though. The Pirates had a great offensive series, posting 31 runs total over four games.
As for Washington, they melted down in the bottom of the ninth. Kyle Finnegan ended up surrendering all three earned on three hits in 2/3 of an inning. If there’s good news, its that the pitching was pretty good before that. Still, Washington needs to corral a surging offense Monday and I don’t think they’ll quite get there.
