The Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds clash Sunday in game 3 of an MLB series at Great American Ball Park. Let’s preview this game and give out a pick and prediction.
Pittsburgh Pirates Betting Preview
The Pirates look to build on their 4-game winning streak. The Pirates are 7 games back in the NL wild card race. The Pirates pitching staff is 22nd in ERA (4.64), 22nd in WHIP (1.39) and 15th in quality starts (51). The Pirates' offense is 21st in runs per game (4.32), 27th in batting average (.239) and 26th in homers (156). Bryan Reynolds leads the Pirates with 147 hits and 82 RBI, while Ke'Bryan Hayes and Andrew McCutchen have combined for 231 hits and 104 RBI. Quinn Priester gets the ball, and he is 3-2 with a 8.61 ERA and 29 strikeouts this season. This will be Priester’s first career game against the Reds.
Cincinnati Reds Betting Preview
The Reds look to snap a 4-game losing streak. The Reds are 2.5 games back in the NL wild card race. The Reds pitching staff is 25th in ERA (4.80), 24th in WHIP (1.41) and 26th in quality starts (43). The Reds' offense is 10th in runs per game (4.72), 17th in batting average (.247) and 15th in homers (182). Spencer Steer leads the Reds with 152 hits and 83 RBI, while TJ Friedl and Tyler Stephenson have combined for 241 hits and 113 RBI. Brandon Williamson gets the ball, and he is 4-5 with a 4.56 ERA and 93 strikeouts this season. This will be Williamson’s second career game against the Pirates.
I'm not running to the window to back the Reds given that they're falling apart at the worst possible time, but they're the better team still, they're at home, and they need a win to stay in the playoff race. Quinn Priester has also been awful with a 8.61 ERA and 1.73 WHIP. If the Reds can't win this game at home, you can probably put a fork in them in terms of their playoff hopes. I'll side with the Reds if forced to pick.
