The Minnesota Twins will head to the Motor City to begin a divisional series with the Detroit Tigers this Monday from Comerica Park.
Twins Preview & Projected Starter
Minnesota moved to 59-54 after sweeping Arizona. The Twins showed up big time over the weekend, and they’ll look to create more space atop the division. The Minnesota offense is scoring 3.47 runs per game, while batting .237, with a .315 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 3.58 ERA, with a 1.18 WHIP.
Pablo Lopez (6-6, 4.01 ERA, 165 Ks) will take the mound for Minnesota. The sixth-year flamethrower did well in St. Louis last week, holding them to one run through six innings pitched to his sixth win of the season. Lopez has put a messy start in Oakland behind him by containing teams to two runs or less over his last three outings, and his first trip to the Motor City went pretty well. The first-time All Star tossed ten strikeouts in six innings, while holding the Tigers to three runs, and he’ll look to replicate that effort here.
Twins Player Trends & Props
• Carlos Correa plated runs in the final two games against Arizona, and he leads the Twins in hits (89) and RBI (48), with twelve home runs.
• Max Kepler homered in all three wins over the DBacks, and he’s up to a team-lead eighteen homers and 42 RBI for the season.
• Donovan Solano has recorded a hit in five of the last six games, and he leads Minnesota in batting (.273)
• Jorge Polanco has reached base in eight of nine games since returning at the end of July.
Tigers Preview & Projected Starter
Detroit moved to 49-62 after dropping two of three to Tampa. The Tigers avoided the sweep with a game two victory, and they’ll look to make life tough on the Twins over the next ten days. The Detroit offense is scoring 2.72 runs per game, while batting .230, with a .300 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 4.41 ERA, with a 1.26 WHIP.
Joey Wentz (2-9, 6.37 ERA, 72 Ks) will get the ball for Detroit. The second-year lefty returned after a month-long absence and managed to earn his second win of the season in Miami last time out, after striking out six over 4.2 scoreless outings. The performance in South Beach marked Wentz’s first shutout start of the year, and it’s unlikely he repeats that against a Twins team he lost to twice last month.
Tigers Player Trends & Props
• Riley Greene has recorded a hit in seven of the last ten games, and he’s leading the Tigers in batting (.297), with 25 RBI.
• Spencer Torkelson had multiple hits in the game three loss, and he leads Detroit in hits (92), home runs (15), and RBI (59).
• Matt Vierling has collected a hit in eight of the previous ten games, and he’s batting .271 for the season.
Corey’s Free Pick
The scrappy Detroit Tigers now have a chance to be as pesky as ever with over a handful of games against the division leaders over the next ten days, but game one has a good chance to sway in the visitors favor. Big pitching advantage on the mound for Minnesota here, and while nothing comes given in the Motor City, Pablo Lopez should be able to handle this lineup again. The Twins should also be able to find production off of a vulnerable Joey Wentz, and I like leaning on those two factors heading into this contest. Back Minnesota for game one of this AL Central series.
