The San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers will conclude their divisional series this Monday from Petco Park on the MLB Network. Los Angeles used a fast start and took game three by six, 8-2.
Dodgers Preview & Projected Starter
Los Angeles moved to 64-46 after defeatingSan Diego. The Dodgers got back into the win column last night, and they’ll look to create more space atop the NL West with a win here. The Los Angeles offense is scoring 5.04 runs per game, while batting .248, with a .330 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 4.50 ERA, with a 1.28 WHIP.
Tony Gonsolin (6-4, 4.11 ERA, 71 Ks) will get the call for Los Angeles. The fifth-year righty capitalized on the home matchup with Oakland last time out, holding them to one run thru five innings to earn his sixth victory of the season. Gonsolin has taken a step back this season, allowing four runs or more in six of his last eight starts, but he did happen to pitch well in his lone meeting with San Diego this season. Gonsolin tossed five scoreless frames to earn his first win of the year, but that outing was in LA, and he’s been shaky on the road this season.
Dodgers Player Trends & Props
• Freddie Freeman homered in the game three victory, and after producing a run in five of the last six games, he leads the Dodgers in BA (.339) hits (149), and RBI (80), with 23 homers.
• Mookie Betts also went yard in Sunday’s win, and after extending his hit streak to thirteen games, he leads the team in home runs (30), with 71 RBI.
• J.D. Martinez has reached base in all three matchups with SD, and he’s posting splits of .260/25/76.
• Amed Rosario got things going with a leadoff shot last night, and after producing multiple runs in four of the last five games, he’s batting .296 with LAD, and has 49 RBI for the season.
Padres Preview & Projected Starter
San Diego moved to 55-57 after losing to Los Angeles. The Padres couldn’t keep up with the Dodgers last night, and they’ll attempt to keep pace with the division leaders Monday afternoon. The San Diego offense is scoring 4.31 runs per game, while batting .228, with a .317 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 3.76 ERA, with a 1.23 WHIP.
Seth Lugo (4-5, 3.54 ERA, 88 K) is set to start for San Diego. The eighth-year righty put a great outing together at Coors last week, tossing a season-high nine strikeouts through seven innings, while holding the Rockies to two runs. Lugo saw the addition of perennial fifth day starter Rich Hill, and delivered his best start of the year, and he’s been pretty solid overall in his first term with the Pads. Lugo has held teams to two runs or less in five of his last six appearances, but this will mark his first time facing the potent Dodgers lineup this season.
Padres Player Trends & Props
• Juan Soto was silent in last night’s contests, but he’s produced a run in five of the previous seven games, and he leads the Padres in home runs (24) and RBI (71), with 107 hits.
• Manny Machado was also quiet in the game three loss, but he plate three runs in Saturday’s win, and he’s posting splits of .259/21/65.
• Fernando Tatis is hitless during the Dodgers series, but he’s posting a solid line of .262/19/58.
• Xander Bogaerts has recorded a hit in eight of the last ten games, and he leads the Pads in hits (108), while batting .268.
• Ha-Seong Kim brings an eleven-game hit streak into this matchup, and he leads the Pads in (.286), with 15 homers and 41 RBI.
Corey’s Free Pick
Los Angeles blitzed San Diego last night, and while revenge could be in store, the firepower on both sides gives us a safer route for the series finale. Tony Gonsolin and Seth Lugo are solid pitchers, but neither are shutdown, and with the both lineups producing at a high rate right now, I like targeting the total here. The Padres may strike back against the Dodgers, but let’s take the Over for this NL West matchup.
