The Los Angeles Angels will host the Seattle Mariners for game two of their divisional series this Friday from Angel Stadium. Seattle stole game one through a ninth-inning grand slam to win by two, 5-3.
Mariners Preview & Projected Starter
Seattle moved at 57-52 after defeating Los Angeles. The Mariners came through big in clutch time last night, and they’ll look to create more space between themselves and the Halos here in game two,. The Seattle offense is 3.87 scoring runs per game, while batting .234, with a .313 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 3.55 ERA, with a 1.19 WHIP.
Luis Castillo (7-7, 2.88 ERA, 149 Ks) will start for Seattle. The seventh-year pitcher put together one of his strongest outings of the season in the desert last week, striking out seven over six scoreless frames to pick up his seventh win of the season. Castillo has turned things around and looked like his old self over his last three starts, albeit two of those performances were against an underwhelming Minnesota team. Castillo struck out ten in first trip to Anaheim back in June, but he was dealt the loss, and he’ll look to avenge that defeat here.
Mariners Player Trends & Props
• Julio Rodriguez had his eleven-game hit streak snapped in the series opener, but he still leads Seattle in hits (110) and home runs (17), with 58 RBI.
• Eugenio Suarez homered in the game one win, and after producing a run in nine straight games, he leads the Mariners in RBI (70), with sixteen homers.
• J.P. Crawford has recorded a hit in seven of the last nine games, and he leads the team in batting at .264, with 36 RBI.
• Teoscar Hernandez has collected a hit in five straight games, and he’s second on the team in home runs (16) and runs batted in (59).
• Cal Raleigh homered in both wins over Boston, and he’s tied with JRod for the team-lead in homers (17), with 45 runs batted in.
Angels Preview & Projected Starter
Los Angeles moved to 56-54 after losing to Seattle. The Angels nearly opened the series with a victory we asked for, but they let it slip away late in the ninth, and they’ll look to regroup Friday. The LAA offense is scoring 4.16 runs per game, while batting .257, with a .333 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 4.43 ERA, with a 1.36 WHIP.
Reid Detmers (2-8, 4.35 ERA, 122 Ks) will make the road start for Los Angeles. The third-year lefty didn’t last long in Toronto last week, allowing two runs in 4.2 innings to take his second straight loss. Detmers has lacked run protection all season from the inconsistent Angels lineup, but he’s been a fun props guy, clearing eight strikeouts in six of his last nine outings.
Angels Player Trends & Props
• Shohei Ohtani homered in last night’s loss after leaving the mound, and he’s first in the AL in home runs (40), while leading LAA in hits (125) and RBI (82), while batting .310.
• Hunter Renfroe plated a pair of runs in the series finale in Atlanta, and he’s posting splits of .248/17/49.
• Mickey Moniak went hitless in the opener, but he leads the Halos in batting .317, with eleven homers and 35 RBI.
• Mike Moustakas collected multiple hits in the series opener, and he’s batting .264, with 31 RBI on the season.
• CJ Cron has recorded a hit in each of his first four games with the Angels, while Randal Grichuk has reached base in three of four.
Corey’s Free Pick
Last night was weird for the Angels after Shohei Ohtani left the mound, and they might have a tough time bouncing back today with a hot Luis Castillo coming to town. Castillo has looked great in his last three starts, and when he’s dialed in, he’s one of the best in the game. If Castillo receives run support, the Mariners should take a 2-0 series lead. Back Seattle this Friday night.
