The Houston Astros will head to the Southside to start a three-game set with the Chicago White Sox this Friday from Guaranteed Rate Field.
Astros Betting Preview
Houston enters at 19-18 after taking two of three from Los Angeles. The Astros snapped a three-game skid with the final two wins, and they’ll look to for more success in the Southside this weekend. The Houston offense is scoring 4.66 runs per game, while batting .238, with a .306 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 3.36 ERA, with a 1.21 WHIP. Yordan Alvarez has produced a run in five of the last six games, and he leads the ‘Stros in RBI (34). Mauricio Dubon has stepped up in the absence of Jose Altuve to lead the team in BA (.287) and hits (37). Jeremy Peña recorded a pair of RBI in the series finale versus the Halos, and he’s scored a team-high 22 runs.
J.P. France (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 5 Ks) will get the ball for Houston. The rookie pitcher performed well in his MLB debut in Seattle on Sunday, tossing five scoreless innings, while fanning five along the way. France has a decent shot to build on that here versus a struggling Sox team.
White Sox Betting Preview
Chicago enters at 13-25 after dropping three of four to Kansas City. The White Sox just can’t seem to find any consistency, and they face an uphill battle with Houston. The Chicago offense is 4.72 scoring runs per game, while batting .238, with a .306 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 5.72 ERA, with a 1.21!WHIP. Andrew Vaughn has a great series in Kansas City, and after producing a RBU in four of the last five games, he’s up to a team-lead of 28. Luis Robert Jr. has recorded a hit in nine of the last ten games, and he leads the Sox in runs scored (24).
Michael Kopech (1-3, 5.97 ERA, 36 Ks) will get the call for Chicago. The fourth-year pitcher was finally able to get into the win column versus Cincy last time out, despite allowing four runs in six innings. Kopech has allowed four runs or more in four of his first seven starts, and even after pitching well in his last home spot against Minnesota, he’s hard to trust on the mound right now.
Houston vs Chicago Trends
Houston is 18-19 against the spread this season, with a 19-17-1 O/U record. Chicago is 17-21 ATS this year, with a 21-14-3 over/under record.
Corey’s Free Pick
Even with a rookie starter set to go, Houston still comes into this series opener with an advantage. The Astros have been the superior team at the plate, and they should be able to produce off of a vulnerable Michael Kopech. Now while I like Houston to open the series with a win, targeting the total may bring a bit more security here. Take the Over for game one of the Sox/Stros series.
