Mets Betting Preview
New York fell to 16-15 after losing to Detroit. The Mets suffered their largest loss since the beginning of April, and they’ll look to avoid being swept here. The New York offense is scoring 4.37 runs per game, while batting .234, with a .329 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 4.16 ERA, with a 1.34 WHIP. Brandon Nimmo doubled in yesterday’s loss, and he leads the Mets in batting average (.306). Pete Alonso has recorded a hit in five of the last six games, and he’s first on the team in RBI (28m).
Justin Verlander (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will get the call for New York. Life is a beautiful circle and this spot feels so right, as Detroit is where it all began for the reigning AL Cy Young winner. This will mark Verlander’s Mets debut, and he’s coming off of arguably the best season of his career. The x All-Star posted a 18-4 record over 28 starts with an immaculate 1.75 ERA, and 185 strikeouts. Verlander may be on a pitch count in first outing, and while it’d be quite the task to replicate lasts season’s form, he should still wind up being one of the most reliable pitchers in baseball.
Tigers Betting Preview
Detroit moved to 12-17 after defeating New York. The Tigers controlled the entire contest, and they’ll now look to bring the brooms out for the first time this season. The Detroit offense is scoring 2.72 runs per game, while batting .216, with a .281 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 4.64 ERA, with a 1.21 WHIP. Javy Baez hit his first homer of the season yesterday, and he’s recorded a RBI in four of the last five games. Matt Vierling has a hit in eight of the last ten games, and he leads the team in batting (.284).
Eduardo Rodriguez (2-2, 2.21 ERA, 30 Ks) will get the ball for Detroit. The eighth-year lefty has been locked in over his last four starts, with two shutout outings versus Baltimore and Cleveland. Rodriguez struck out five over 5.2 innings versus the O’s in a second straight start to win his second decision of the season.
New York vs Detroit Trends
New York is 15-14 against the spread this season, with a 12-16-1 O/U record. Detroit is 14-13 ATS this year, with a 12-14-1 over/under record.
Corey's Free Pick
Justin Verlander opening the season in Detroit brings a ton of nostalgia, and it make this mid-day spot a must-see. The Tigers would love nothing more than to spoil his return, and complete their first sweep of the season, so they should come out aggressive. In return, the Mets will be playing for Verlander and to prevent a third straight loss, we may be in for some runs here. My Virginia ties will sway me to test Verlander on the mound with the Mets ML, but I like the manageable Over even more with both teams playing for something tomorrow.
