The Baltimore Orioles will head up to the Motor City to face the Detroit Tigers for a four-game set this weekend from Comerica Park. Baltimore swept Detroit at Camden Yards last week, and held them to one run in each contest.
Orioles Betting Preview
Baltimore moved to 16-8 after taking two of three from Boston. The Orioles have come out of the gate on fire, and they’ve won nine of their last ten games. The Baltimore offense is scoring 4.95 runs per game, while batting .249, with a .33 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 4.29 ERA, with a 1.26 WHIP. Jorge Mateo has recorded a hit in seven of the last eight games, and he leads the team in hitting (.351). Ryan Mountcastle leads the O’s in RBI (20), with Cedric Mullins right behind him at 19 after producing four runs in the two-game set versus Boston.
Kyle Gibson (4-0, 3.60 ERA, 24 Ks) will take the bump for Baltimore. The veteran pitcher has come to B-More in peak form, and he turned the clock back with a gem last week. Gibson dominated Detroit over 6.1 innings with eleven strikeouts to earn his fourth victory of the season. Gibson has always had good stuff, and he’s capitalized on the run support and emerging program the O’s are building. The 2021 All-Star may have trouble replicating that performance here in the Windy City, but he’s proven trustworthy thus far this season.
Tigers Betting Preview
Detroit moved to 9-14 after taking two of three from Milwaukee. The Tigers responded to a four-game skid by taking the first two contests on the road, and they’ll look to respond to being swept by Baltimore last week. The Detroit offense is scoring 2.72 runs per game, while batting .216, with a .281 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 4.64 ERA, with a 1.21 WHIP. Javy Baez has come back to life, recording a hit in nine straight games, but his status must be monitored after leaving the series finally versus Milwaukee.
Joey Wentz (0-3, 7.56 ERA, 14 Ks) will take the mound for Detroit. The second-year pitcher had a tough time in Baltimore last week, giving up five runs in four innings to suffer his third loss of the season. Wentz did manage to strike out seven in his last home start versus San Francisco, but the O’s may give him trouble again here.
Baltimore vs Detroit Trends
Baltimore is 13-11 against the spread this season, with a 13-10-1 over/under record. Detroit is 13-10 ATS this year, with a 9-13-1 O/U record.
Corey's Free Pick
Two hardworking, gritty cities will face off for the second weekend in a row, and while I do believe at some point Detroit will find a way to avoid losing seven straight times, game one feels like it will sway Baltimore’s way. Kirk Gibson was sensational in his spot versus the Tigers last week, and it’d be foolish to expect the same rate of strikeouts at Comerica, but he should be able to find success against a lackluster lineup. The Orioles also had their way with Joey Wentz, and it’s more than likely they will find a way to produce again here. Back Baltimore for game one, and give their team total a look as well, as we could be in for more of the same.
