The San Diego Padres will head to the Windy City to start a three-game set with the Chicago Cubs this Tuesday from Wrigley Field on the MLB Network.
Padres Betting Preview
San Diego moved to 12-12 after taking three of four from Arizona. The Padres have cleaned up a slow start by winning four of their last five games, and they closed their stay in Phoenix by defeating the DBacks by two, 7-5. The San Diego offense is scoring 4.12 runs per game, while batting .216, with a .301 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 4.34 ERA, with a 1.36 WHIP. Xander Bogaerts leads the Pads in batting (.330) and hits (17). Matt Carpenter is now first on the team in RBI (13) after producing five runs in Sunday’s win over Arizona.
Blake Snell (0-3, 6.00 ERA, 17 Ks) will start for San Diego. The eighth year pitcher has found himself on the wrong side of each decision despite solid work on the mound. Snell has allowed more than three earned runs in only one of his four starts, and he struck out five in five innings at home versus Atlanta in his last outing. It is worth noting Snell has faced the Braves twice, and had to make a start in Queens against the Mets.
Cubs Betting Preview
Chicago comes in at 12-9 after dropping three of four to Los Angeles. The Cubs shut the Dodgers out in game two, but they’d fall by four runs in the finale, 7-3. The Chicago offense is scoring 4.65 runs per game, while batting .280, with a .349 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 3.67 ERA, with a 1.17 WHIP. Nico Hoerner caught fire last week with multiple hits in four of six games, and he now leads the Cubs in batting (.355). Patrick Wisdom is first on the team in RBI (18), while Cody Bellinger is now second at 15 after enjoying success against his former team, and producing a run in three of four games with the Dodgers.
Justin Steele (3-0, 1.44 ERA, 24 Ks) will get the call for Chicago. The third-year pitcher was successful in California last week, striking out eight in seven full innings versus Los Angeles, then going up to Oakland and delivering another quality start to earn his third straight victory. Steele looks like the real deal early on, and he has a good shot to triple down on the Golden State with a solid outing against San Diego here.
San Diego vs Chicago Trends
San Diego is 12-12 against the spread this season, with a 11-12-1 over/under record. Chicago is 13-8 ATS this year, with a 12-9 O/U record. The Padres are 0-4 in their last 4 games following an off day.
Corey's Free Pick
Chicago comes into a good spot here at home in game one. San Diego has plenty of talent, but they just aren’t producing well as a unit at the plate right now, and it’s unlikely they find life against Justin Steele, who’s been one of the best arms in the league through one month. Steele has also come out in much better form than Blake Snell, who will have a tough time with Chicago's lineup at home, and could suffer his fourth straight defeat. The Pads will likely steal one of these matchups, but with the Cubs looking to bounce back after a tough weekend at Wrigley, back them in game one this Tuesday.
