The Chicago White Sox will play the Houston Astros in Game 1 of their series on Thursday night at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.

White Sox Preview

The Chicago White Sox finished last season with a record of 81-81 and were second in the AL Central. Chicago went 12-14 in Spring Training this season and the expectations are nowhere near where they were last season. The White Sox are projected to be just below .500, but they are playing in one of the weakest divisions in baseball. The projected starting pitcher for Chicago in this game is Dylan Cease, who was 14-8 with a 2.20 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP last season.

Astros Preview

The Houston Astros finished last year with a record of 106-56 and finished first in the AL West. The Astros won the 2022 World Series after defeating the Philadelphia Phillies in six games. Houston went 14-10 in Spring Training this year, but they are dealing with a few injury issues to start the season. The biggest injury is with Jose Altuve, who may start on the 60 day IL due to a thumb injury. The projected starting pitcher for Houston is Framber Valdez, who was 17-6 with a 2.82 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP last year.

Chicago is 5-2 in their last 7 games and 4-1 in their last 5 Thursday games. The under is 3-0-1 in Chicago’s last 4 road games. Houston is 40-11 in their last 51 Thursday games and 44-16 in their last 60 home games. The over is 4-1 in Houston’s last 5 game one’s of a series. Chicago is 10-22 in these two teams last 32 head to head meetings.

Both of these teams will look to start the season off on the right foot in this game, but expectations are different for both teams. Chicago is not expected to do much this year, while Houston should have another very good season. The Astros finished Spring Training by winning 24-1 against the Cardinals and will look to carry some of that offense over to this game. Even with Houston dealing with some injuries, I like them to get the win behind a strong performance by Valdez.

The pick in this article is the opinion of the writer, not a PickDawgz site consensus.
