The Kansas City Royals and the Minnesota Twins will open the season in AL Central play with a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium. Minnesota led the head-to-head series last season, 12-7.
Twins Betting Preview
Minnesota went 14-15 in the Grapefruit League, after finishing third in the AL Central last year. The Twins will begin the season without talented infielder Jorge Polanco, who is on the DL with a knee injury, but Byron Burton is in for another big season. Minnesota brought in Joey Gallo, and managed to serve as the winners of the Carlos Correa sweepstakes, so they should be in the mix for a division title this season.
Pablo Lopez will get the Opening Day call for Minnesota. The fifth-year flamethrower set personal-bests last season in Miami, going 10-10, with a 3.75 ERA, and 174 strikeouts. Lopez was solid on the road in 2022 with a 6-5 record, and he’ll look to start his tenure with the Twins strong here.
Royals Betting Preview
Kansas City went 19-13 in the Cactus League, after finishing last in the AL Central last year. The Royals will be leaning on their youth turning the corner this season after watching Bobby Witt Jr. thrive in his first season. Longtime Royals Hunter Dozier and Salvador Perez remain in the fold, and should serve as clubhouse leaders once again.
Zack Greinke will make another Opening Day start for Kansas City. Greinke returned to KC last season to wind his storied career down, and he posted a 4-9 record, with a 3.68 ERA and 73 strikeouts. Greinke was admirably better at Kauffman last season with a 4-2 record and 1.91 ERA, so it’ll be interesting how he fares at home this season.
Minnesota vs Kansas City Trends
Minnesota went 74-88 against the spread in 2022, with a 74-76-12 over/under record. Kansas City went 81-81 ATS, with a 82-74-6 O/U record.
Corey's Free Pick
It’s truly interesting how well Zack Grienke pitched at home in 2022, and I’m willing to test how well that carries over into this season. The old guard could prove me wrong here with a vintage outing at Kauffman, but I like the Twins coming in and asserting themselves early with a division win. The Correa saga is behind them, and the return of a healthy Byron Buxton should do wonders for this lineup. Test the Twins run line here in AL Central matchup.
