The New York Mets will play the Miami Marlins in Game 1 of their series on Thursday afternoon at loanDepot park in Miami, Florida.
Mets Preview
The New York Mets were 101-61 last season and finished in second place in the NL East standings. The Mets did make the postseason last year, but they lost their series with San Diego 2-1. New York went 10-14 during Spring Training, but they did not hit the ball very well. On the flip side, the Mets had the seventh best ERA and seventh best WHIP during the Spring. The projected starting pitcher for New York is Max Scherzer, who was 11-5 with a 2.29 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP last year.
Marlins Preview
The Miami Marlins were 69-93 last year and finished in fourth place in the NL East standings. The Marlins went 7-16 during Spring Training and were one of the worst offensive teams during the Spring. The Marlins do have some young talent and a decent pitching staff, so it will be interesting to see if they can get their bats going at all this season. The projected starting pitcher for Miami is Sandy Alcantara, who was 14-9 with a 2.28 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP last year.
Trends
New York is 16-5 in their last 21 Thursday games and 37-17 in their last 54 game one’s of a series. The over is 6-1 in New York’s last 7 game one’s of a series. Miami is 5-0 in their last 5 Thursday games and 30-65 in their last 95 game one’s of a series. The under is 4-1-1 in Miami’s last 6 home games. The over is 6-0 in these two teams last 6 head to head meetings.
Pick
This should be an excellent pitching duel between two very good starting pitchers. Both of these starters had lower than a 2.30 ERA last season and lower than 1.00 WHIP. The Marlins biggest issue is going to be their offense and I don’t think they are going to put a ton of pressure on Scherzer in this game. The Mets lineup is much better than Miami’s, so I am going to side with them here.
