The San Francisco Giants will head up to the Bronx to open the season in interleague play with a three-game set with the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on. The Giants and Yankees didn’t cross paths last season, but they have a ton of history here in New York, as they faced off in the first Subway Series back in 1921.
Giants Betting Preview
San Francisco went 14-15 in Cactus League play after finishing third in the NL West last season, and they’ll look to return to the postseason here in 2023. The Giants ended Spring Training by winning seven of their last ten games, but they may limp into the NYC without longtime clubhouse member Austin Slater and new addition Mitch Haniger, as both outfielders may be unavailable for game one.
Logan Webb will make the Opening Day start for San Fran. The fifth-year right handed set career-highs across the board in 2022, going 15-9, with a 2.90 ERA and 163 strikeouts. Webb went 6-3 on the road last season, and he may be able to overcome the first game jitters at Yankee Stadium.
Yankees Betting Preview
New York went 13-18 in the Grapefruit League, after finishing first in the vaunted AL East last season. The Yankees had an eventful off-season per usual, and they were particularly a thorn in the Giants side, retaining Aaron Judge after a war of negotiations and plucking Carlos Rodon away from them. New York comes into 2023 with an identical imposing lineup, with top prospect Anthony Volpe set to make his debut at shortstop after a strong spring.
Gerrit Cole will make his fourth Opening Day start for the Bombers. The eleventh-year pitcher put together another workhorse season in 2022, going 13-8 over 200 innings, with a 3.50 ERA and 257 strikeouts. Cole went 5-5 at home last season, and that could improve with the continuity growing in the Bronx.
San Francisco vs New York Trends
San Francisco went 77-77-8 against the spread in 2022, with a 77-85 over/under record. New York went 79-87-5 ATS, with a 76-95 O/U record.
Corey's Free Pick
The added motive for this early season should set an interesting atmosphere. San Francisco is going to steal one of these contests to avenge New York’s actions of the summer, but I don’t think it’s game one. The Yankees come into this season without one of the biggest distractions in baseball over their heads, and they should come out on top with a dependable Gerrit Cole on the bump. Trust a good start from New York here after last season’s tough, abrupt ending, and take their run line on Opening Day.
