The Oakland Athletics and Detroit Tigers face off on Tuesday in a doubleheader at Comerica Park. This is a preview for both of the games. On Monday it was the Athletics that secured the 2-0 victory.
The Oakland A’s come into this game with an 11-18 record overall and their offense has been a big issue coming into this game. Over the last five games, the A’s have only scored six runs total, and that has led to them winning only one game. It’s even more disappointing because the pitching has been strong during that stretch.
On the other side of this matchup is the Detroit Tigers who sit with an 8-20 record overall and in each of their last two games they have been shut out. The offense has been an issue all season for the Tigers also, and they are ranked 30th in terms of runs scored per game. Javier Baez has 11 runs driven in, but he has been a bit cold the last week, and that has hurt the offense.
On the mound for the Tigers in Game 1 is Tarik Skubal who sits with a 1-2 record and an ERA of 3.04. In his last start against the Astros, he went six innings giving up six hits and two runs.
On the mound for the A’s in Game 1 will be Frankie Montas who sits with a 2-2 record and an ERA of 3.34. In Montas last start against the Rays he went seven innings giving up four hits and zero runs.
On the mound for the Tigers in Game 2 is Alex Faedo who went five innings in his first start giving up eight hits and two runs.
The A’s are 1-7 in their last eight home games against a right-handed starter. The under is 7-0 in Skubal’s last seven starts during Game 2 of a series. The under is 5-0 in Montas last five games following a team loss in their previous game.
The first game between these two teams was 2-0, and I don’t see either offense breaking out in this game. The A’s have gotten good pitching and I expect Montas is going to lock down the bats of the Tigers. This game is going to be a lower scoring game and the under is going to cash in Game 1.
In Game 2 I expect it will be the A’s offense that gets the job done. Faedo only gave up two runs in his first start, but he gave up eight hits, and the A’s will put together enough hits to get the job done. Back the A’s.
