The Los Angeles Dodgers face the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday, May 9th, 2022 at PNC Park for game one of a three-game series.
The Los Angeles Dodgers brought out the brooms this weekend as they swept the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. The Dodgers are now 19-7 this season and 9-5 on the road as well in 2022. The Dodgers are in first place in the NL West, but the division is extremely competitive this season with all five teams owning over .500 records, even the fifth place Diamondbacks. The Dodgers have no room for error and will look for another series win at the very least here. The Pirates lost a three-game series to the lowly Reds at Great American Ballpark this weekend after splitting a doubleheader on Saturday and then dropping the final game on Sunday. The Pirates are 11-16 this season and are 7.0 games behind the Brewers for first place in the NL Central standings.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are projected to bring left-hander Julio Urias to the mound to face the Pirates. Urias is 2-1 with a 1.88 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP through his first 24.0 innings of the season. Urias' strikeout numbers are down and his walks are up in 2022, but he still has a strong 1.88 ERA to start the year.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are sending left-hander Dillion Peters to the bump to take on the Dodgers in game one of the series. Peters is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.48 WHIP through his first 16.2 innings of the season. Peters has yet to allow an earned run this year, as he has been a bright spot for this Buckos starting rotation. Peters will have his toughest test of the season here against a loaded Dodgers lineup.
The Dodgers are never easy to bet against but I do think in this spot, there is some value with the home dog, at least on the run line. With Peters pitching so well and the fact that the Dodgers have excelled against right-handed pitching more so than left-handed, it makes sense to me to take the Pirates +1.5. I think Pittsburgh can find a few runs on Urias to keep this game within a run.
