The Texas Rangers face the New York Yankees on Sunday, May 8th, 2022 at Yankee Stadium for a doubleheader.
The Rangers and Yankees will finally get this series started as their first two games that were scheduled for Friday and Saturday were canceled due to weather. The Rangers enter this series with a 10-14 record overall this season and a 6-5 record on the road. The Rangers have won back-to-back series over NL East teams and are coming off a two-game sweep of the Phillies on the road. The New York Yankees are 18-7 on the year and a whopping 10-3 at Yankee Stadium this year as well. The Bombers have played very well in front of the home crowd and the team is currently in first place in the AL East standings.
In game one, we should see Jon Gray and Gerrit Cole as the starting pitchers. Gray is 0-1 with a 7.50 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP through his first 12.0 innings of the season. Gray has allowed two home runs in his first few outings and that does not bode well at Yankee Stadium. After a slow start to the 2022 season, Gerrit Cole is pitching very well as of late and will look for another strong outing here. I think the Yankees have the clear advantage in the starting pitching matchup in game one, as Cole is in far better form and his bats should be able to back him up as well. The Rangers have struggled against right-handed pitching this season and I do not think things get any easier here. I will lay the run line with the Yankees in game one.
In game two, the projected starters are Dane Dunning and Jordan Montgomery. Dunning is 1-1 with a 3.81 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP through his first 26.0 innings of the season. Dunning has improved from where he was in 2021, but he still has a few issues including his rather high WHIP. Jordan Montgomery is 0-1 with a 2.88 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP through his first 25.0 innings. The Rangers have done really well against lefties this year as they are top-5 in baseball in team OPS vs. left-handed pitching in 2022. I think game two is the best chance the Rangers have on Sunday, so I will take them and the 1.5 runs on the run line here.
So in game one, I will lay the 1.5 with the Yankees. In game two, I will take the 1.5 with the Rangers.
