The Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds face off on Saturday in a doubleheader at the Great American Ballpark.
The Pirates sit with a 10-14 record overall but they are coming off a big win in their last game against the Detroit Tigers. The offense scored seven runs, but more impressive the pitching staff only gave up two runs. The starting pitching has been a big issue for this team this year. The top player this season has been Michael Chavis who has hit three home runs and driven in 12 RBIs.
On the other side of this matchup is the Cincinnati Reds who have had only three wins all season, and they haven’t even shown any flashes of turning it around. Over the last two games, the Reds pitching staff has really struggled giving up 28 runs total. Brandon Drury has been the top player for the Reds hitting four home runs and driving in 10 RBIs.
On the mound for the Pirates in Game 1 is JT Brubaker who sits with an 0-2 record an ERA of 6.20.
On the mound for the Reds is Connor Overton who sits with a 0-0 record and an ERA of 1.69. In his only start this season against the Rockies he went 5.1 innings giving up three hits and one run.
Getting the start for the Pirates in Game 2 is Mitch Keller who sits with an 0-4 record and an ERA of 5.32. In his last start against the San Diego Padres he went six innings giving up five hits and one run.
On the mound for the Reds in Game 2 is Robert Dugger. The Reds just claimed him a few days ago. On the season he sits with a 5.06 ERA and has had seven strikeouts.
The Pirates are 0-6 in Keller’s last six starts. The Pirates are 4-1 in their last five opening games of a doubleheader. The over is 4-0 in the Reds last four games overall. The under is 4-0 in the Reds last four games played on Saturday.
The Reds haven’t found a lot of success, but they are going to find some in Game 1 of this doubleheader. Overton had one of the best starts of the season for the Reds and I don’t trust this Pirates team to find success scoring runs against him. Brubaker gave up three runs in the last start and the Reds will score at least that in this game. Back the Reds.
In the second game I expect plenty of scoring by both teams. Keller and Dugger both sit with an ERA of of over five, and both offenses are going to tee off in this game. It wouldn’t shock me if this was an 8-7 type of game with the over cashing.
