The New York Mets face the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday, May 7th, 2022 at Citizens Bank Park for game two of a three-game series.
This series was originally scheduled to be a four-game set, but with the postponement due to weather on Friday night, the Mets and Phillies will play three games in this set and make up the rain out in July. The Mets took down the Phillies on Thursday night in an 8-7 final score. It was not your typical 8-7 ballgame, as it was one of the more thrilling games of the 2022 season. The Phillies owned a 7-1 lead going into the top of the 9th, but the bullpen was not able to find three outs before the Mets poured it on for seven runs to take the lead. It was the cherry on top of what has been an extremely disappointing start to the season for the Phillies, who are now four games below .500 at 11-15 this season. The Mets improved to 19-9 on the year and now lead the NL East by 5.5 games.
The New York Mets are projected to bring right-hander Max Scherzer to the mound to face the Phillies. Scherzer is 4-0 with a 2.61 ERA and a 0.81 WHIP through his first 31.0 innings of the season with his new club. Scherzer has been nothing short of sensational for the Mets in 2022, and he will look for another strong performance on Saturday afternoon.
The Philadelphia Phillies are projected to send righty Kyle Gibson to the bump for Saturday's contest. Gibson is 2-1 with a 2.93 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP through his first 27.2 innings of the season. Gibson's ERA and WHIP may be slightly higher than Scherzer's but he has also been stellar for Philadelphia in 2022.
The Mets are finding ways to win while the Phillies are doing the complete opposite. With an advantage in this pitching matchup and a stronger lineup/bullpen, I have to like the Mets in this spot yet again. I think New York takes advantage of the various mistakes the Phillies continue to make on and off the field.
