The St. Louis Cardinals face the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday, April 24th, 2022 at Great American Ballpark for game three of a three-game series.
The Cincinnati Reds continued their losing ways as Cincy dropped its 11-straight game on Saturday afternoon in a 5-0 shutout loss. The Reds have scored two or fewer runs in their last eight games and things have not been very pretty on the pitching/defense side either. Tyler Mahle's pitch count was high early on Saturday, forcing the Reds to go to their bullpen in the fifth inning. Cincinnati allowed five earned runs and 10 hits to the Cards while only having three base hits and no runs to show for itself. The Reds are now a measly 2-13 this season, making for the worst record in the entire league. The Cardinals have won four of their last five games overall and are now five games above .500 at 9-4 this season with an impressive 6-3 record on the road as well.
The St. Louis Cardinals are projected to start the veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright on Sunday as the Cards look for the three-game sweep. Waino has pitched very well in 2022 thus far, even in his age 40 season. Wainwright is 2-1 with a 2.81 ERA in his first 16.0 innings of work this season. Wainwright has also had a boost in strikeout % this season, owning double-digit strikeouts per nine rating early on.
The Cincinnati Reds are set to bring the youngster Nick Lodolo to the mound to take on the Cardinals. Lodolo is 0-2 with an 8.00 ERA in his first 9.0 innings in the majors. Lodolo does have some promising spots in his game, such as his ability to miss bats and earn strikeouts. Lodolo has 12 K's in 9.0 innings, which is well above average.
As much as I would like to take the home dog here, the Reds have shown me nothing the past week and a half for me to even think about taking them in this spot. Wainwright is the superior starter and the Cardinals are just the far better team playing the far better ball right now. Nick Lodolo has a bright future but I like the Cardinals in this one.
