The Boston Red Sox face the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, April 24th, 2022 at Tropicana Field for game three of a three-game series.
The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Boston Red Sox by the final score of 3-2 in extra innings. The Rays were victorious via the walk-off in a game that had no score through 9.0 innings of play. Not only did the Red Sox not have a run on the board after nine innings, but Boston was also without a hit. The Tampa Bay combined bullpen effort held the Red Sox hitless until the top of the 10th inning when Bobby Dalbec hit a go-ahead triple that scored the ghost runner on second base. Down 2-0 going into the final half of the inning, the Rays would score a run on an error and make it 2-1. Centerfielder Kevin Kiermaier was the hero in the end, as he hit a walk-off two-run shot with two outs in the innings in a 3-1 count. The Rays are now a game above .500 at 8-7, while the Red Sox fell to a game below .500 at 7-8.
The Boston Red Sox are projected to start left-hander Rich Hill on Sunday as he will face his former club in this one. Hill is 0-1 with a 7.00 ERA through his first 9.0 innings of work this season. Hill has allowed 11 hits, three walks, and two home runs in his first two outings. Hill really struggled in his most recent start as he suffered the loss against the Twins in an 8-3 ballgame.
The Tampa Bay Rays are set to send lefty Shane McClanahan to the bump to take on the Rays here. McClanahan is 0-1 with a 2.40 ERA through his first 15.0 innings of 2022. McClanahan has earned 24 strikeouts so far this season, giving him a strikeouts per nine rating above 14. McClanahan will look for his first official victory of the year on Sunday, and he has certainly pitched well enough to get one.
I like the Rays here behind McClanahan. Rich Hill's strikeout numbers are down, he was shelled in his last start, and I think his former team can get to him early in this one. McClanahan is the far superior starter here and I think the Rays are plainly the better team as well. Give me Tampa Bay here.
