The Baltimore Orioles face the Oakland Athletics on Monday, April 18th, 2022 at Oakland Coliseum for game one of a four-game series.
The Baltimore Orioles are coming off quite the exciting series with the New York Yankees. The O's took two of three from the Bombers at Camden Yards, including one walk-off win in extra innings and a 5-0 shutout victory on Sunday afternoon. The Orioles scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a stranglehold lead over the Yankees on Sunday and with the win, the Orioles are 3-6 on the season.
The Oakland A's are right at .500 to start the season at 5-5. This is despite not playing a single home game yet, as Monday's contest will be the Athletics' home opener. The Athletics were not expected big things this year with a plethora of off-season subtractions, but Oakland has competed at a high level thus far.
On Monday we will see Spencer Watkins face Frankie Montas on the mound. Watkins is 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA after 3.0 innings of one-run ball in his first outing. Watkins has only earned one strikeout in those innings and he also allowed four hits and two walks, giving him a steep 2.00 WHIP.
Frankie Montas is the ace on the hill in this Oakland rotation, and after a tough start to the year against the Phillies, Montas bounced back in a big way with a very strong start against a tough Rays lineup. Montas is now 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 11.1 innings of work. Montas will face the weakest lineup he has seen this season on Monday, and this is a perfect spot to lower that ERA below the 4.00 mark.
The A's are steep favorites for a reason in my opinion. I worry about Watkins in this start, as although he only allowed one earned run in his first outing, he was hit hard and did allow more walks than earned strikeouts. The Athletics have been in much tougher matchups this season and have prevailed, so I don't think this matchup at home intimidates this A's team whatsoever. I'll take the Athletics on the run-line.
