The Tampa Bay Rays face the Chicago White Sox on Sunday, April 17th, 2022 at Guaranteed Rate Field for game three of a three-game series.
The Chicago White Sox took down the Tampa Bay Rays by the final score of 3-2 on Saturday afternoon to take the first two games of this three-game series and clinch a series win. Both games have been low-scoring, tight, and have had the exact final score of 3-2 in favor of the Sox. The Rays are starting to struggle as Tampa Bay has lost four in a row, dating back to April 13th. The Rays are 4-5 and are dealing with various injuries in the starting rotation. For that reason, Kevin Cash has had to be creative when it comes to his pitching staff, something that he is very comfortable doing. In fact, Kevin Cash of the Rays was one of the first managers to implement the "opener", in which a pitcher starts the game but has no intention of facing the lineup more than once through.
The Tampa Bay Rays are projected to open with J.P. Feyereisen on Sunday. Feyereisen will make his first "start" of the season and will be expected to pitch 1-2 sharp innings for the Rays before Cash goes to his bullpen and early-relief specialists. Feyereisen has pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball and has earned four strikeouts in that stretch in 2022.
The Chicago White Sox are set to bring right-hander Vince Velasquez to the mound to take on the Rays. Velasquez pitched well in his White Sox debut, but he did allow a home run in the 4.0 innings he had. Velasquez has had big problems with the long ball in his career, and it will be interesting to see if he can limit the long ball in this start and going forward.
Normally, I would not want to back a team that has as much uncertainty as the Rays do currently, but this is Kevin Cash's bread and butter and I think Tampa Bay will be just fine going forward. I like the Rays at this price to salvage the final game of this series and avoid the sweep.
