The Oakland Athletics face the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday, April 16th, 2022 at Rogers Centre for game two of a three-game series.
The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Oakland Athletics by the final score of 4-1 on Friday night. The Jays moved to 5-3 with the win and the Athletics dropped back to .500 at 4-4 with the loss. The Blue Jays struck first in the first inning with a Vladimir Guerrero solo home run to right-center field. Toronto would add another run in the bottom of the second on an Epinal double. The game would remain 2-0 until the top of the 6th, where the Athletics found their first and only run of the ballgame on a Chad Pinder RBI single. Toronto added two insurance runs, one in the sixth and one in the seventh, to make it a 4-1 game. That was all she wrote, and the Jays earned an all-important home victory to start the series.
The Oakland Athletics are projected to start right-hander Paul Blackburn on Saturday. Blackburn turned some heads as he had a fantastic first start of the season. Blackburn pitched 5.0 innings of scoreless baseball and struck out seven batters along the way. For an Oakland rotation that just lost Sean Manaea right before the season started, Blackburn's success in his season debut was a very promising sign.
The Toronto Blue Jays are set to bring left-hander Hyun Jin-Ryu to the bump to take on the A's here. Ryu struggled quite a bit in his first outing of the season, and he only made it through 3.1 innings before being pulled rather early. Ryu struggled at the end of the 2021 season and was not the ace that the Blue Jays had hoped he would be. Ryu is now one of many strong starters in this Blue Jays rotation, but he will have to start showing strong signs or he will run the risk of losing his top-2 starter role in this rotation.
In this game, I think the A's keep it close and have their best shots at earning an outright upset in this series. Blackburn was phenomenal in his season debut and until Ryu shows some sign of improvement, I cannot lay the price the Blue Jays have here. Give me the run and a half with Oakland.
