The Atlanta Braves face the San Diego Padres on Friday, April 15th, 2022 at Petco Park for game two of a four-game series.
The San Diego Padres defeated the Atlanta Braves by the final score of 12-1 on Thursday night in San Diego. It was a blowout win from the Padres from start to finish, as it was one of the ugliest games the Braves have had in a long time. San Diego found the scoreboard right away in this one, as the Padres scored three early runs in the bottom of the first inning. With two more runs in the bottom of the second, things were already getting out of hand for Charlie Morton and the Braves staff. Atlanta could only muster six hits and one run in the contest, with three errors in the field as well. With the loss, the Braves move to two games below .500 at 3-5, while the Padres improve to 5-3 on the season.
The Atlanta Braves are projected to send right-hander Kyle Wright to the mound to face the Padres on Friday night. Wright pitched a gem in his first outing of the season, not allowing a single run and only conceding two hits in 6.0 innings. Wright also racked up six strikeouts in the win for Atlanta, and it was a promising sign for Wright, who struggled in 2021. Wright was also very sharp in spring training, not allowing an earned run in the spring either.
The San Diego Padres are protected to send prospect Mackenzie Gore to the bump to make his MLB debut. Gore racked up 16 strikeouts in 12.0 innings during the spring and owned a 4.50 ERA in those innings as well. Gore had one outing in the minors before being called up, in which he did not allow a run in 5.0 innings with only two hits allowed and seven earned strikeouts.
I like the under here, as even though the Padres' offense exploded on Thursday, it has been rather inconsistent to start the season thus far. The Braves lineup looked sluggish both on Thursday night and in the previous game on Wednesday afternoon against Washington. I like Gore to have a strong MLB debut and I think Wright continues to pitch well for Atlanta.
