The Washington Nationals face the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday, April 14th, 2022 at PNC Park for game one of a four-game series.
The Washington Nationals took two of three against the defending World Series Atlanta Braves to start the week on the road. The Nats earned their first series win on the young campaign and are now 3-4 this season after previously losing their opening series with the Mets. The Nats will now be in their second-straight road series and will face another National League opponent in the Pirates here. Washington has had inconsistent efforts at the plate and on the mound, as the team is only hitting .222 as a club and the team ERA is high at 6.11. Those numbers are inflated a bit with Washington's ugly 16-4 loss on Tuesday to the Braves, however.
The Pittsburgh Pirates split a two-game series with their NL Central rivals in the Cubs. Pittsburgh defeated Chicago by the final score of 6-2 on Wednesday afternoon for its second win of the season. The Buckos are now 2-3 overall this season and 1-1 at home as this will be the second-straight home series for the Pirates.
The Washington Nationals are projected to send right-handed pitcher Joan Adon to the mound to face the Pirates. Adon struggled in his first start of the season against the Mets, allowing four earned runs, four walks, one home run, and four hits in 4.1 innings of work. Adon pitched well in his lone start against the Red Sox in 2021, but he will need to miss more bats than the three strikeouts he had in that first outing in 2022.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are set to bring right-hander JT Brubaker to the bump for game one of this series. Brubaker also struggled quite a bit in his first start of the season, only going 3.0 innings deep while allowing four hits, four earned runs, one home run, and three walks. Brubaker and Adon had very similar lines, but Adon was able to go 1.1 innings farther.
I think the Nationals have the better lineup and slightly better starting pitcher in this matchup, so I am going to take them and the plus money here.
