The Chicago Cubs face the Colorado Rockies on Thursday, April 14th, 2022 at Coors Field for game one of a four-game series.
The Chicago Cubs split a two-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park this week, moving the Cubbies' record to 3-2 overall and 1-1 on the road this season. The Cubs surprised the Brewers with a home series win to start the season, but Chicago looked far less impressive in its series with one of the weaker teams in the NL in Pittsburgh. The Cubs have been led by their international signee, Seiya Suzuki, who has a .400 batting average, 3 home runs, and 9 runs batted in. The Cubs' offense looked a bit sluggish in the series with the Pirates, but a trip to Coors Field can certainly fix that.
The Colorado Rockies are off to yet another strong start to the season, just like we saw in 2021. Colorado is 4-1 on the year and earned two series wins over the Rangers on the road at the Dodgers at home. The Rockies struggled mightily away from Coors Field in 2021, but sweeping the two-game series at Texas proved that this team can at least compete on the road.
The Chicago Cubs are projected to send left-hander Justin Steele to the mound for this one. Steele pitched well in his first start of the season, but a windy Wrigley Field that benefited pitchers will not be what he gets here at Coors. There is a reason that this total is set at 11.5, and I think Steele could be in trouble in this spot against a Rockies lineup that did a ton of damage against southpaws at home in 2021.
The Colorado Rockies are set to bring a lefty of their own in Kyle Freeland. Freeland struggled in his first start of the season against a very tough Dodgers lineup at Coors. I do expect a much better start from Freeland in this one, but the Cubs' bats should be able to put a few runs past him in this outing.
I like the over here, as I do not trust either starting pitcher nor these bullpens. I think the Rockies' lineup could put up 12 runs themselves, and the Cubs' bats are looking for a breakthrough performance themselves.
