The Oakland Athletics face the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, April 13th, 2022 at Tropicana Field for game three of a four-game series.
The Tampa Bay Rays walked it off in extra innings over the Oakland A's on Tuesday, April 12th. It was a thriller of a game as the Rays defeated the A's by the final score of 9-8 in 10 innings. This game went back and forth, which each team owning different 3+ run leads at various times in the game. The Athletics struck first in the top of the 10th, but two runs from the home team in the bottom half of the inning gave Tampa all it needed in its fourth game of the series. Despite not winning the game outright, Oakland did cover the run-line as the underdog, making it three-straight run-line covers for the A's and two-straight failed covers for the Rays as well. The A's are 2-3 overall this season and the Rays are 4-1, good enough for first place in the AL East early on.
The Oakland A's are projected to send their ace in right-hander Frankie Montas to the mound on Wednesday. Montas did not pitch his best in his first start of the season, allowing five earned runs in 5.0 innings of work to the Phillies. Montas was able to give his team much-needed innings and never quit on the mound despite things not going his way early. Montas was arguably the A's most consistent starter in 2021, and I think he will be fine going forward this season.
The Tampa Bay Rays are set to bring the left-hander Shane McClanahan to the bump to take on the A's. McClanahan pitched well in his first start of the season, going 4.1 innings of one-run ball against a weak Orioles lineup. McClanahan does get into pitch-count issues, however, as he is a strikeout pitcher and can rack up a high pitch count early in outings. With the Rays having to use a lot of its bullpen on Tuesday, I worry that the Rays staff may not be rested enough for the amount of work it may have on Wednesday.
Because I think Oakland has the advantage at starting pitcher with Montas being able to go deeper into ballgames, I like the A's on the Moneyline here getting plus money. We have seen Oakland compete hard in this series and embrace the underdog role, so it is worth a shot yet again on Wednesday.
