The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies face off on Monday in a key early season NL East showdown at Citizens Bank Park.
The Mets looked good in their opening series against the Washington Nationals winning three of the first four games. The Mets won the first three games of the series before losing 4-2 on Sunday. In the three wins the Mets gave up only four runs total, and they are going to need to continue to get strong pitching in this game. Pete Alonso has been the top player for the Mets hitting a home run and driving in four RBI’s.
On the other side of this matchup is the Philadelphia Phillies who won two of their first three games against the Oakland Athletics. On Sunday was the only loss and the offense struggled in that game scoring only one run. On Friday the Phillies won 9-5 and Saturday they were able to win 4-2. Nick Castellanos has been a welcome addition for the team and so far he has hit one home run and three RBI’s. In this game scoring some runs early is going to be crucial to get the job done.
Taijuan Walker will get the start for the Mets and last season with the team he finished with a 7-11 record and an ERA of 4.47. The biggest key for Walker has been consistency and the Mets need him to be good this season.
Getting the start for the Phillies will be Ranger Suarez and last year with the team he was lights out finishing with an 8-5 record and an ERA of 1.36.
The Mets are 5-2 in their last seven games overall. The Phillies are 5-1 in their last six games on Monday. The Mets are 1-6 in their last seven meetings against the Mets.
Walker’s biggest issue last season was being inconsistent and he is going to really struggle to start this season. The Phillies offense is going to chase him early and it’s going to be up to the Mets bullpen to try and keep this close. Look for Suarez to slow down the Mets offense and the Phillies will win this game on the money line.
