The Boston Red Sox face the Detroit Tigers on Monday, April 11th, 2022 at Comerica Park for game one of a three-game series in Detroit.
The Boston Red Sox were able to take the final game of a three-game series with their bitter rivals, the New York Yankees, on Sunday Night Baseball to earn their first win of the season. Blown leads in the first two games of the year put the Red Sox in a 0-2 hole to start the season, but strong bullpen work from Boston on Sunday was the difference for the Sox victory in game three of the series. The Detroit Tigers were able to stun the White Sox in the first game of the season as Detroit mounted an impressive comeback and defeated Chicago via the walk-off on a controversial final play. The Tigers were not as fortunate in the final two games of the series, as the White Sox handled the Tigers comfortably with 5-2 and 10-1 victories, both covering the run-line as favorites. The Tigers are an up-and-coming team that made some noise in the offseason with the acquisition of Javier Baez. So far, Baez is 4-12 with a .333 average and one RBI in his first three ball games with his new club.
The Boston Red Sox are projected to start right-hander Michael Wacha in this one. In 2021, Wacha struggled with the Tampa Bay Rays in the 124.2 innings he pitched in. Wacha owned a 3-5 record with a 5.05 ERA and had some troubles with the long ball. Wacha had struggled the year prior in his stint with the New York Mets, owning an ERA above 6.00 in 2020. In spring training, Wacha pitched in 15.0 innings, allowed 11 earned runs, four home runs, and struck out 13 batters (giving him a 6.60 ERA).
The Detroit Tigers are set to bring one of their top pitching prospects in Matt Manning to the mound to face this Red Sox lineup. Manning pitched in 85.1 innings in 2021 and did not have the best results. Manning owned a 4-7 record with a 5.80 ERA, but he also had a much lower FIP at 4.62, which could suggest he was getting a bit unlucky on the mound. Manning put together a solid spring training performance as he owned a 3.65 ERA and struck out 10 batters in 12.1 innings.
I like the over here in the first five innings. I think the Tigers can win this ball game but it will not be pretty, as both teams should be able to score plenty early on. I think we see plenty of offense early and often in this one.
