The Pittsburgh Pirates face the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, April 10th, 2022 at Busch Stadium for game three of a four-game series.
The Cardinals took down the Pirates by the final score of 6-2 on Saturday in St. Louis. The Cards are now 2-0 and the Pirates fall to 0-2 on the young season. St. Louis trailed both 1-0 and 2-1 but the Cardinals quickly took over the ball game with a three-run third inning that was aided by a two-run home run by Paul DeJong. The Cardinals bullpen was sharp yet again as it has not allowed a run in this series thus far. These two teams will meet again on Sunday and will wrap up this four-game set on Monday. After that, the two clubs will not meet again until the end of May.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are projected to start Bryse Wilson in this game against the Cards. Wilson went 3-7 with a 5.35 ERA in 2021. Despite having a decent spring, Wilson has not had a lot of success at the Major League level in his career thus far. His 4.8 K/9 on his career is too low to be a viable option in any rotation, but Wilson did rack up the strikeouts in spring, so it will be interesting to see if he can translate that to the regular season level.
The St. Louis Cardinals are set to bring lefty Steven Matz to the bump for his season and Cardinals debut. Matz was a member of the Blue Jays in 2021 where he went 14-7 with a solid 3.82 ERA in Toronto. Matz is on his third team in as many years as he was also a member of the New York Mets for his early years in the majors. Matz was not his best in spring training as he owned a 5.23 ERA in 10.1 innings pitched.
The Cardinals are big favorites yet again on Sunday and for me, I have to take St. Louis on the run line or pass altogether. This Pirates lineup has struggled out of the gates and the bullpen has not been able to keep the Cards off the board. I think the Cardinals score plenty on Wilson and Pittsburgh in this one.
