The Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals face off on Saturday in an MLB showdown at Busch Stadium. These two teams played the first game of the season on Thursday and it was the Cardinals that won 9-0.
This is a Pirates team that doesn’t have a ton of confidence heading into the season and the first game might be a good indication of why, they are going to have some struggles scoring runs. In Game 1 Pittsburgh had six hits but they couldn’t get any of them across the plate. The Pirates also had two errors and that is something that will need to be cleaned up. First baseman Yoshitomo Tsutsugo was the top hitter finishing with two hits.
On the other side of this matchup is the Cardinals whose offense looked really good in the first game. At the end of the second inning the Cardinals had four runs scored and they didn’t look back as they cruised to the victory. Tyler O’Neill was the top player for Cardinals finishing with two hits and five runs driven in. Nolan Arendo also had a strong game finishing with one hit, one walk, one run, and two RBI’s.
Getting the start for the Pirates will be Mitch Keller and last season was a terrible one. Keller finished with a 5-11 record and an ERA of 6.17.
On the mound for the St. Louis Cardinals will be Miles Mikolas who is going to be leaned on heavily this season. Last season with the Cardinals, Mikolas finished with a 2-3 record and an ERA of 4.23. His hope is that he can get back to his old form this season.
The Pirates are 16-35 in their last 51 games as an underdog. The Cardinals are 5-1 in their last six games following an off day. The Pirates are 20-44 in their last 64 meetings against the Cardinals. The under is 7-3-3 in the last 13 meetings.
Mitch Keller had some issues last season, and I don’t see him magically starting off this season strong. The Cardinals offense had no issues on Thursday and they are going to be quite impressive again in this game. Back the Cardinals -2.5 to cash.
