The New York Mets face the Washington Nationals on Saturday, April 9th, 2022 at Nationals Park for the third game of a four-game series.
The Mets and Nationals were involved in some fireworks during last night's game. After Francisco Lindor was hit by a pitch, each dugout emptied as the teams exchanged some pushes, shoves, and choice words. Mets hitters were hit three times on Opening Day and when Lindor was hit up high and went down instantly, New York's dugout had enough. The Mets were able to get vengeance by earning the win in the end, moving to 2-0 on the season. For New York, this has to be a good sign as the team is winning even without Jacob deGrom (injury) being a part of the rotation. Both Tylor Megill and Max Scherzer have pitched well in their season debuts, and now the Mets will hand the ball to a right-hander making his season and team debut.
The New York Mets are set to bring Chris Bassitt to the mound. Bassitt pitched very well for the Oakland A's in 2021 but his season was cut short because of an ugly injury that he suffered when a ball struck him in the head on a live drive. Bassitt was one of many strong pickups that the Mets made in the offseason to help bolster this team on both sides of the ball.
The Washington Nationals are projected to send Joan Adon to the bump for this one. Adon only pitched in 5.1 innings for the Nats in 2021 and in those innings, he allowed two earned runs, one home run, and struck out 9 batters (for a wicked K/9 of 15.2). Adon will not pitch too deep in this one for the Nationals, and I expect Washington to use a lot of its bullpen and long-relievers in this contest.
I think the Mets are going to win this series on Saturday and give themselves a chance at a four-game sweep on Sunday. The Mets' lineup is looking very strong as the team has performed well in the first two games of the season. The Mets' offense was one of the worst in the MLB in 2021, so that is a promising sign to see, even though it is still very early in the season. I will take the Mets on the run line.
