The Washington Nationals and New York Mets face off on Friday in their second game of the MLB season at Nationals Park. On Thursday it was the New York Mets that were able to come away with the 5-1 victory.
The New York Mets spent a lot of money this offseason and it at least paid off in the first game as they were able to come away with the victory. At the end of the 4th inning, the game was tied but they scored two runs each in the fifth and sixth to secure the victory.
The Mets offense used a balanced attack with five different guys driving in five runs. Robinson Cano had two hits, two runs, and one walk. Mark Canha also had a big game with two hits, one run, one hit, and one walk.
On the other side of this matchup is the Washington Nationals who have a lot of questions and the first game didn’t seem to answer many of them. The Nationals finished with only six hits and one run, and their pitching staff let them down, something they hope isn’t a consistent theme. Catcher Keibert Ruiz finished the game with two hits. Juan Soto also had one hit, one run, one walk, and one RBI.
Getting the start for the Mets will be Max Scherzer who knows this Nationals team very well. Scherzer was dealing with some hamstring trouble but he looks good to go in this game. Last season with the Dodgers he went 7-0 and had an ERA of 1.98.
Getting the start for the Nationals will be Josiah Gray who finished last season with a 2-2 record and an ERA of 5.48.
The Mets are 4-1 in their last five games as a favorite. The Nationals are 16-41 in their last 57 games on grass. The Mets are 4-9 in their last 13 meetings in Washington. Mets are 8-3 in the last 11 meetings.
The Mets have a big advantage on the mound with Scherzer going and I don’t trust the Nationals bats, especially with how they looked on Thursday. Look for the Nationals to only score a run or two and the Mets will give Scherzer some solid run support. The Mets are going to cruise to a comfortable victory on the run line.
