The Miami Marlins face the San Francisco Giants on Friday, April 8th, 2022 at Oracle Park for a Major League Baseball matchup.
The Miami Marlins could be a team on the rise and one to look out for in 2022. The pitching is certainly there, as young arms such as Sandy Alcantara and Trevor Rogers are almost in their prime and are coming off successful campaigns in 2021. The Marlins only won 67 games last season, but the team showed plenty of signs of improvement. The Marlins’ biggest struggles were at the plate, as Miami was ranked 29th in the league in team OPS. Miami did address the need for some bats as the Fish went out and signed Jorge Soler to a three-year deal and Avisail Garcia to a four-year contract. Soler hit 27 tanks last year with the Royals and Braves and is only two seasons removed from a 48-home run performance in 2019. Garcia hit .262 with 29 homers and 86 RBIs last year with the Brewers. The Marlins did not lose any big names in the offseason and the team will look very similar to last year’s, with the exception of Soler and Garcia. Sandy Alcantara is the projected starter for this one and in 2021, Alcantara went 9-15 with a 3.19 ERA.
The San Francisco Giants had an epic regular season and a nightmare postseason in 2021. The Giants won 107 games last season, which was the best record in the league by one game over the Dodgers. It was the Dodgers that knocked the Giants out of the playoffs in the NLDS in five games. Game 5 ended on a very controversial final strike call on Wilmer Flores, and the season ended on a very sour note for San Fran. The Giants did lose some big pieces of that 107-win team in the offseason as Kevin Gausman, Kris Bryant, Donovan Solano, and Alex Dickerson all moved on to different clubs. The Giants did make a few solid pickups in free agency, signing Carlos Rodon, Joc Pederson, and Alex Cobb. I think Cobb was an excellent pickup for San Francisco and he should be a great asset at the back end of the rotation. In this particular game, Logan Webb is the projected starter. Webb was outstanding last season as he earned an 11-3 record with a 3.03 ERA and a 2.72 FIP. The Giants’ rotation looks very strong going into the season and San Francisco should be near the top of the leaderboards in team ERA yet again in 2022.
The Giants are a -141 favorite here for game one of the season. I am going to take a shot with the Marlins getting the plus money as the small road dog here. This should be a very low-scoring game and I think both starters have strong outings to start their seasons. The Marlins addressed their offensive needs in an affordable way in the offseason, and I think that difference is seen this season and in this one. Give me Miami +114.
