The Cincinnati Reds face the Atlanta Braves on Friday, April 8th, 2022 at Truist Park for game two of a four-game series.
The Reds were the victors on Opening Day as they beat the defending World Series Champions by the final score of 6-3 on Thursday evening. Brandon Drury hit a big-time three-run homer in the 6th to give the Reds a 6-1 lead and Cincinnati never looked back. The Reds' bullpen pitched rather well, as only Dauri Moreta allowed two earned runs in the eighth in relief. Despite the loss, Atlanta's Austin Riley had a strong showing going 3-4 with a two-run home run and two singles. The Braves only mustered up one other hit in the game and that was by Ozzie Albies.
Cincinnati is projected to bring left-hander Reiver Sanmartin to the mound for the second game of this series. Sanmartin pitched in very limited opportunities in 2021 for the Reds. In 11.2 innings Sanmartin struck out 11 batters, allowed only two earned runs, and only walked two batters as well. In spring training, Sanmartin pitched four scoreless and almost spotless innings with only one hit allowed and two strikeouts earned. Sanmartin will have a much bigger role for this Reds team in 2022 as the team is looking for good arms to make up what is a pretty questionable starting rotation on paper.
The Atlanta Braves are set to bring right-hander Charlie Morton to the bump to face the Reds on Friday night. Morton was excellent last season going 14-6 with a 3.34 ERA for the Braves in 2021. Morton did not have a great 2020 season in Tampa but he managed to have a strong bounce-back campaign with the champs in Atlanta. During spring training this season, Morton did not allow a single earned run and pitched 4.2 innings of no-hit baseball with five strikeouts and only one walk.
This total is rather steep in my opinion, especially with two starters that pitched lights out in spring and had success last season as well. I know Sanmartin is not going to pitch very deep in this game, and one has to worry about what is a very bad Reds bullpen, but I think for at least the first five innings of this one, runs are hard to come by. I will take the under in the first five innings here.
