The Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays face off on Friday in their first MLB game of the season at Tropicana Field.
The Orioles finished the 2021 season with the worst record in baseball and this might still be a rebuilding year, but there is a bit of a buzz around this team. This offseason the team didn’t bring in any stars but they did sign Jordan Lyles, Rougned Odor, and Robinson Chironos. They also have one of the best farm systems in all of baseball but they won’t have Adley Rutschman with them for this game as he was ruled out for opening day. This is a very young team, but the offense should be better than last season. The big question is what exactly can their pitching do.
The Tampa Bay Rays won the American League East last year and the hope is they will be back for more this season. The Rays still don’t have a big payroll, but this is a team that should compete for the division crown again. Wander Franco looks like to be a young star for this team and he was locked up to a long term deal. The team also is going to lean on Brandon Lowe. Some other key players include Ji-Man Choi and Yandy Diaz.
Getting the start for the Baltimore Orioles will be John Means and last year he finished with a 6-9 record and an ERA of 3.62. One big issue for Means is he didn’t get a ton of run support last season.
Getting the start for the Tampa Bay Rays is Shane McClanahan and he has a 10-6 record and an ERA of 3.43
The Orioles are 12-40 in their last 52 meetings against the Rays. The over is 9-2-1 in the last 12 meetings. The over is 5-0-1 in the last six meetings in Tampa Bay. The Orioles are 14-50 in their last 64 road games.
Means didn’t get a ton of run support last season and it’s going to be no different in this game. Shane McClanahan had a big season for the Rays and he is going to lock down the Orioles offense. Look for the Rays to score four or five runs and that will be enough to win this game on the run line.
