The San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks face off on Thursday in an MLB opening day showdown at Chase Field. 

One of the most disappointing teams during the 2021 season was the San Diego Padres who finished with a 79-83 record. The team made some changes this offseason including having Bob Melvin take over as manager. The Padres are dealing with injuries heading into this season including Fernando Tatis Jr who suffered a wrist injury during the offseason. Even with Tatis Jr out, this is an offense that is still talented. Manny Machado, Luke Voit, Wil Myers, and Trent Grisham are all key members of the lineup. 

On the other side of this matchup is the Arizona Diamondbacks who finished the 2021 season with a 52-110 record and there isn’t a ton of hope for this team. The Diamondbacks didn’t spend a ton of money this offseason bringing in Jordan Luplow and Mark Melancon. Gone from the Diamondbacks are Tyler Clippard, Kole Calhoun, and Joakim Soria. This is a lineup that doesn’t have a ton of star power and if they want to find success this year it’s going to take some small ball.

Getting the start for the Padres is Yu Darvish and in the last start, he finished with an 8-11 record and an ERA of 4.22. During spring training Darvish pitched 11.1 innings and had 14 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.38. 

Getting the start for the Diamondbacks is Madison Bumgarner and during the 2021 season, he finished with a 7-10 record and an ERA of 4.67. During Spring Training, Bumgarner has pitched 11 innings and finished with 11 innings and an ERA of 4.09. 

The Padres are 16-36 in their last 52 overall. The Diamondbacks are 37-97 in their last 134 overall. The Padres are 4-15 in their last 19 meetings in Arizona. 

Yu Darvish had some struggles during the 2021 season, and the Padres have struggled to win games in Arizona. Even though I don’t think Arizona finds a ton of success this season, I do think they will find some success in this game. Look for Bumgarner to have a strong game, and the Diamondbacks will win this game.
