The Milwaukee Brewers face the Chicago Cubs on Thursday, April 7th, 2022 at Wrigley Field for an MLB Opening Day matchup.

The Milwaukee Brewers enter the 2022 season as the favorites to win the NL Central and get back to the postseason for the fifth straight year. The Brewers relied on their fantastic pitching staff in 2021, which was led by the eventual NL Cy Young award winner in Corbin Burnes. Burners, who will be the starter for Milwaukee on opening day, finished the 2021 campaign with an 11-5 record, a 2.43 ERA, and 234 strikeouts. The Brewers had a rather quiet offseason, with the biggest acquisition being former MVP and five-time all-star, Andrew McCutchen. McCutchen’s .778 OPS from a year ago will help an overall average Brewers lineup this season. With the DH being universal this year, this move made even more sense for Milwaukee. The Brewers did not lose any big names in the offseason, but a few key depth pieces did move on to different clubs such as catcher Manny Pina and third baseman Eduardo Escobar. The Brewers’ one-two punch of Burnes and Woodruff makes for one of the best rotations in the league yet again this season and the Brewers will look to start the new season with a win over their divisional rivals.

The Chicago Cubs are firmly in the rebuilding stages and will look to take the next step in 2022. The Cubs have missed the postseason in two of the last three seasons, and a very memorable trade deadline of last season sent most of the Cubs’ core from the 2016 World Series team to other clubs, such as Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, and Javier Baez. The Cubs have had a strong spring training this season with a solid winning record of FINISH. Despite not being a contender on paper, the Cubs were very busy during the offseason. Seiya Suzuki signed to a five-year deal with Chicago after 9 seasons in Japan. Former Mets starter Marcus Stroman was given a three-year deal as he looks for a bounce-back season in the NL. The Cubs also brought in some nice depth pieces such as outfielder Clint Frazier, infielder Jonathan Villar, and shortstop Andrelton Simmons. The biggest concern for Chicago has to be the rotation and bullpen as this was a Cubs team that owned a team ERA of 4.87, which was ranked 27th in the MLB. Cubs’ ace Kyle Hendricks is projected to get the start on opening day for the Cubbies. Hendricks had a rather disappointing season for Chicago has although he owned an impressive 14-7 record, he also owned a steep 4.77 ERA and a high 1.35 WHIP.

In recent years, MLB opening day games have been as random as it gets in a 162-game season. I do, however, believe that Corbin Burnes will be too much for a pretty weak Cubs lineup to handle. I am not a big fan of Kyle Hendricks either, and I think the Brewers get to him early and often. I think we are getting a bettable price with the Brew Crew on the road here, so I will take them on the money line.
