The Cleveland Guardians and Kansas City Royals face off on Thursday in MLB opening day at Kauffman Stadium. The weather is expected to be in the mid 40’s when the first pitch happens in this game.
The Royals are coming off a 74-88 record but the hope is that they can improve from last season with all the young talent that is on the squad. Even though there are some questions surrounding this team, this is a lineup that can be strong, if the players live up to the expectations. Hunter Dozier, Carlos Santana, and Nicky Lopez are both going to be leaned on heavily. Salvador Perez hit 48 home runs last season, and he is going to be a key this season and in this game.
On the other side of this matchup is the Cleveland Guardians who have a low payroll this season but they did sign a long term extension with Jose Ramirez. The Guardians have clearly made it clear they want to get younger and get some of the young guys a lot of playing time. Some of the key players that will be leaned on will be Myles Straw, Amed Rosario, and Franmil Reyes. A big question with this team is the bullpen, but players like Logan Allen will be leaned on heavily.
Getting the start for Cleveland will be Shane Bieber who is going to need to be an ace if the Guardians want to be competitive this season. During spring training Bieber only went 4.2 innings and the record was 0-2 and an ERA of 13.50.
Getting the start for Kansas City will be Zack Greinke who is back with the team where it all started. During spring training he went 6.2 innings and finished with four strikeouts and ERA of four strikeouts.
The Guardians are 63-31 in the last 94 meetings between the two teams. The Guardians are 16-5 in the last 21 meetings in Kansas City.
The better lineup in this game is with Kansas City, and they also have an advantage on the mound with Greinke going. This is a Guardians team that is going to have issues scoring runs this season, and that will hurt them in this game. I expect the Royals will score four or five runs and that will be enough to get the job done.
