Tampa Bay Rays -150 Detroit Tigers +130 Total: 9
The Tigers’ Tarik Skubal has struggled of late, allowing five home runs in his last 13 innings pitched; Detroit is 0-3 in those starts. The Rays offense has continued to roll and lead the majors in scoring over the last two weeks. Take Tampa Bay to get it done on the road.
Pick: Tampa Bay Rays -150
Colorado Rockies +200 Philadelphia Phillies -233 Total: 8.5
Philadelphia and Colorado have both been producing from the plate, ranking in the top five in scoring over the last two weeks. The Rockies’s Chi Chi Gonzalez has given up more runs than he has innings pitched in his last four starts. Expect some scoring in this one.
Pick: Over 8.5
Toronto Blue Jays -208 Baltimore Orioles +175 Total: 10.5
The Orioles have done well against the Jays’ Steven Matz this season, scoring five runs on 11 hits over nine innings. Baltimore has a great opportunity to steal one here on get-away-day for Toronto. Take a chance on the home dogs.
Pick: Baltimore Orioles +175
Washington Nationals -135 Pittsburgh Pirates +115 Total: 8.5
Patrick Corbin was great in his lone start against the Pirates this season, but he has struggled mightily since then. The Pirates have been getting hot from the plate, ranking fifth in the majors with a .294 average over the last seven days. Give me Pittsburgh at home.
Pick: Pittsburgh Pirates +115
Milwaukee Brewers -155 Cleveland Indians +135 Total: 7.5
The Brewer’s Brandon Woodruff has been lights out on the road, boasting a .166 BAA with 97 strikeouts over 83.2 innings. On the other side, the Indians’ Logan Allen has allowed at least three runs in four of his last five starts and gave up two homers in his last start at home. Back Milwaukee.
Pick: Milwaukee Brewers -155
Miami Marlins +325 Atlanta Braves -400 Total: 8.5
The Braves’ Max Fried has been pitching his best over the last two months and will look to keep that going here with Atlanta looking to close out the division. He will also be looking for revenge after the Marlins tagged him for eight runs in his first home start of the year back in April. Miami has been in a rut, so no need to chase the big odds here. Take the Braves by a few.
Pick: Atlanta Braves -1.5
Los Angeles Angels +325 Houston Astros -400 Total: 8.5
The Angels continue to struggle from the plate, with a .200 average over the last seven days and just 3.4 runs per game. The Astros are hitting .315 over that same stretch. Houston’s Lance McCullers Jr. has limited this Angels lineup to a .250 career average with 21 strikeouts in 60 at bats. Give me the Astros on the run line.
Pick: Houston Astros -1.5
Boston Red Sox +140 Chicago White Sox -160 Total: 8.5
Lance Lynn had a rough outing in his previous start, but he has done a good job bouncing back all season. The White Sox’ offense has also been on a nice roll, and the Red Sox have had issues with their staff. Boston has yet to name a starter for this one, and their pitchers have struggled with a 6.60 ERA over the last week. Back the White Sox at home.
Pick: Chicago White Sox -160
Kansas City Royals +155 Minnesota Twins -175 Total: 9
The over is 8-3-3 in this series, but these offenses have cooled off of late. Over the last two weeks, the Twins are hitting just .217 with 3.1 runs per game. The Royals are hitting .235 over the same stretch. Twins starter Bailer Ober has also been pitching well, with a 2.30 ERA in five August starts. Fade the total.
Pick: Under 9
Cincinnati Reds -125 St. Louis Cardinals +110 Total: 8.5
The Reds have owned Cardinals’ starter J.A. Happ this season, tagging him for 10 runs over 5.2 innings in two starts. The Reds’ Sonny Gray has also seen his struggles against the Cards, giving up five runs over 3.2 innings in his lone start in St. Louis. Play the over.
Pick: Over 8.5
San Francisco Giants Chicago Cubs Total:
The Cubs have been relying on the longball for most of their scoring recently but will have no such luck against the Giants’ Logan Webb. He has only given up eight home runs all season, with none allowed in his last five starts. Look for Webb to shut down this Chicago lineup and earn the win.
Pick: San Francisco Giants
Texas Rangers +175 Oakland Athletics -208 Total: 8
The over is 4-0-1 in the last five games between these two, and their offenses have been rolling. Both starters have looked vulnerable against these lineups, so I expect the trend to continue. Take the over.
Pick: Over 8
Arizona Diamondbacks +165 Seattle Mariners -185 Total: 7.5
Arizona ranks last in the majors with a .173 average over the last seven days. We also have two lefties going, and the Mariners rank last in the majors with a .228 average against southpaws this season. Look for this one to go under.
Pick: Under 7.5
San Diego Padres +155 Los Angeles Dodgers -175 Total: 7.5
The Dodgers are 7-0 in Max Scherzer’s starts since joining the team. He has not allowed more than two runs in a game and tossed 7.2 scoreless innings against the Padres two weeks ago. The Padres Blake Snell has also done well against this Dodgers lineup, and LA has looked lost at the plate over the last few weeks. Take the under.
Pick: Under 7.5
New York Yankees -111 New York Mets +100 Total: 8
The Mets’ Carlos Carrasco has given up over a hit per inning and at least two runs in his last five starts, and his ERA at home has ballooned to 7.45 this season. The Yankees have yet to name a starter for this one, but their bullpen has done a great job all season and should be able to piece together a solid outing here.
Pick: New York Yankees -111
