We have a full slate of MLB games on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, with all 30 teams set to play. Check out our best picks below, as well as the updated betting odds.
GAME ONE- Boston Red Sox -145 New York Yankees +120 Total: 7
The New York Yankees have been playing much better of late, winning 6 straight series after losing 3 of 4 in Boston back in July. The Red Sox have owned this series but have lost the last two games against New York when Nathan Eovaldi has started. Yankees starter Luis Gil is inexperienced but has plus stuff. He has not allowed a run with 14 strikeouts through 11 innings pitched. Take the Yankees at home.
Pick: New York Yankees +120
GAME TWO- Boston Red -130 Sox New York Yankees +110 Total: 6.5
The Red Sox bullpen has struggled with a 5.04 ERA over the last two weeks. They have yet to announce a starter for this one, so it will be tough to rely on them after some likely work in game one. Jordan Montgomery has done a good job against the Red Sox this year with a 3.06 ERA and .219 OBA. Give me the Yankees to sweep the day-night double-header.
Pick: New York Yankees +110
Toronto Blue Jays -177 Washington Nationals +162 Total: 9.5
The Nationals have lost 7 straight games heading into this series. They are averaging just 3.5 runs per game over the last 7 days with a 7.23 team ERA. The Blue Jays have averaged over 5 runs per game with at least one home run over the last 2 weeks. Fade the Nat’s.
Pick: Toronto Blue Jays -177
Los Angeles Angels +110 Detroit Tigers -121 Total: 9.5
The Tigers Casey Mize has the edge on the mound facing a struggling Dylan Bundy for the Angels. He has allowed over a hit per inning with nearly a home run per game this season. The Angles have not been the same offense without Mike Trout, despite Shohei Ohtani’s best efforts. Give me the Tigers at home.
Pick: Detroit Tigers -121
Atlanta Braves -125 Miami Marlins +115 Total: 8
Both offenses have been potent over the last two weeks, with the Braves averaging 6 runs per game and the Marlins averaging 5.4. However, the Braves have had more success against the Marlins Sandy Alcantara. Huascar Ynoa limited this Marlins lineup to 1 run with 10 strikeouts earlier in the season. Take the Braves with good value on the road.
Pick: Atlanta Braves -125
Baltimore Orioles +165 Tampa Bay Rays -180 Total: 8.5
John Means has been the Orioles most reliable starter this season but has been hit hard by the Rays. They have averaged more than a hit per inning with 11 runs in 16.1 innings against him. Drew Rasmussen has allowed just one run in each of his first three starts for Tampa Bay. Take the Rays at home.
Pick: Tampa Bay Rays -180
Chicago Cubs +153 Cincinnati Reds -153 Total: 9.5
Kyle Hendricks has allowed 6 runs in 10.1 innings against this Reds lineup this season. On the flip side, Vladimir Gutierrez has allowed just one run in each of his last three starts and has limited this Cubs lineup to 3 runs in 11.1 innings this season. Give me the Reds.
Pick: Cincinnati Reds -153
Milwaukee Brewers -135 St. Louis Cardinals +125 Total: 7.5
Both pitchers have dominated these respective lineups, with both Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals and Corbin Burnes of the Brewers allowing just one run this season. Something will have to give, as both lineups rank in the top 5 in average over the last two weeks. With both teams having plus arms in the pen, bank on this one going under.
Pick: Under 7.5
Seattle Mariners -150 Texas Rangers +140 Total: 8.5
The Rangers staff has been struggling of late, with a 4.76 ERA over the last two weeks. The Mariners have been one of the best staffs in the league over that same stretch. They will send out lefty Tyler Anderson in this one; the Rangers rank 28th in the majors with a .229 average against southpaws this season. Give me the Mariners on the road.
Pick: Seattle Mariners -150
Cleveland Indians +125 Minnesota Twins -135 Total:
The Indians Eli Morgan has allowed multiple runs in each of his last 5 starts, with the team going 2-3 in those games. The Twins have won Bailey Obers’ last three starts, averaging a strikeout per inning. I would avoid this one, but with the Indians struggles on the road, back the Twins.
Pick: Minnesota Twins -135
Houston Astros -190 Kansas City Royals +170 Total:
Not only have the Astros been the most consistent team in the Majors average-wise, but they have been the best against lefties this season. The Royals are averaging just 3.7 runs per game over the last two weeks, not enough to get it done with Daniel Lynch on the mound. He has a 7.00 ERA with over a hit per inning at home this season. Give me Astros.
Pick: Houston Astros -190
Oakland Athletics -121 Chicago White Sox +110 Total: 9
This one is set up to be a pitchers’ duel. Reynaldo Lopez has been stellar since joining the rotation for the White Sox, allowing just 10 hits through 20 IP with 22 strikeouts. The A’s Chris Bassitt has allowed just one run in his last three starts. Fade the total.
Pick: Under 9
San Diego Padres Colorado Rockies Total:
The Rockies have averaged over 5 runs per game over the last two weeks, ranking 2nd in the majors with a .283 team average. The Padres have yet to name a starter, and their staff looks vulnerable of late. Over the last two weeks, they have a 4.63 team ERA, and .272 OBA. Take the Rockies at home.
Pick: Colorado Rockies
Philadelphia Phillies -120 Arizona Diamondbacks +100 Total: 9
The Phillies Kyle Gibson was hit hard last time out against the Dodgers and will have to face a streaking Diamondbacks lineup that is hitting .300 as a team over the last week. The Phillies have not been getting it done from the plate, hitting just .197 as a team over the same stretch. Take the Diamondbacks at home.
Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks +100
New York Mets +135 San Francisco Giants -145 Total: 8
With both starters pitching well this season and of late, this one may come down to the bullpen battle. The Giants have been much more efficient with a 3.00 ERA compared to the Mets’ 4.75. With the Giants success at home, coupled with the Mets struggles on the road, lean the Giants here.
Pick: San Francisco Giants -145
Pittsburgh Pirates +255 Los Angeles Dodgers -295 Total: 9
The Dodgers David Price has been respectable since returning to the rotation, allowing two runs in each of his last two starts. The Pirates have extended their struggles from the plate over the last week, ranking 28th with a .221 average and 3.6 runs per game. From the plate, the Dodgers have averaged 6 runs per game over the same stretch. Lay the juice.
Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers -295
