Sunday, August 1st, 2021 provides us with 15 games and all 30 teams in the MLB. With plenty of afternoon action and an exciting Sunday Night Baseball game, let’s take a look at each contest and some free betting picks as well.
Philadelphia Phillies -145 Pittsburgh Pirates +125 Total: 9
The Phillies are in a bad spot after two straight losses to the Pirates, but I think we see a Phillies win on Sunday to salvage this series. Kyle Gibson is projected to make his Phillies debut and I expect a strong start from him.
Pick: Philadelphia Phillies -145
Chicago Cubs -105 Washington Nationals -115 Total: 8.5
I think we see plenty of offense between two sellers at the trade deadline. Adbert Alzolay of the Cubs and Erick Fedde of the Nationals are the probable starters and neither pitcher has impressed much this season. Expect plenty of runs early and often at Nationals Park.
Pick: Over 8.5
Kansas City Royals +225 Toronto Blue Jays -280 Total: 10
I do not love the price the Blue Jays have on Sunday, but to me, this is a Toronto or pass kind of spot. Jose Berrios may very well make his Blue Jays debut and Brad Keller gets the nod for the Royals. The Royals' Keller has had a rough season and I think the Jays get to him here. I will lay the alternate run line in Toronto.
Pick: Toronto Blue Jays -2.5
Baltimore Orioles +115 Detroit Tigers -135 Total: 9.5
The Orioles have quieted one of the hotter teams in baseball this weekend and I think that continues on Sunday. Spenser Watkins of the Orioles is a nice young arm who has pitched well with a 3.10 ERA this season. The Orioles hit left-handed pitchers well and that is exactly what they get in the Tigers' Tyler Alexander.
Pick: Baltimore Orioles +115
Cincinnati Reds +140 New York Mets -160 Total: 9
The Reds and Mets have put together some very entertaining ballgames this year and I do not think this is an exception. I think this game is decided in the latter innings, therefore I will go with the stronger bullpen in the Mets on the money line here.
Pick: New York Mets -160
Milwaukee Brewers +115 Atlanta Braves -135 Total: 9
The Braves made some solid pickups at the deadline and look to be a team to watch out for in the NL East. With the Braves' Charlie Morton on the mound, I think we see a quality start. As far as the Brewers' Brett Anderson, he is someone I tend to fade because his advanced numbers are not attractive. I will take the home team here with Atlanta.
Pick: Atlanta Braves -135
Cleveland Indians +175 Chicago White Sox -210 Total: 8.5
The White Sox's pitching staff was destroyed by the Indians on Saturday but I think Chicago reels it in and wins a convincing home game on Sunday. Dylan Cease of the White Sox pitches well against the AL Central and I think he does enough for a White Sox win here. I will lay the run line with Chicago.
Pick: Chicago White Sox -1.5
Minnesota Twins +115 St. Louis Cardinals -135
The Cardinals' Adam Wainwright is the superior starter when compared to the Twins' Michael Pineda. The Twins may have the stronger bats, but I think Wainwright does a good job at keeping them rather quiet on Sunday.
Pick: St. Louis Cardinals -135
Seattle Mariners -145 Texas Rangers +125 Total: 9
I am going to fade the Rangers' Mike Foltynewicz yet again in this one, as he is in really poor form. Folty has allowed 10 home runs in his last three starts which is an appalling stat to even think about. Mariners roll.
Pick: Seattle Mariners -145
Houston Astros -105 San Francisco Giants -115 Total: 8.5
We have seen plenty of offense between these two teams in the first few games of this series but I think we see the opposite on Sunday. The Astros' Luis Garcia and the Giants' Logan Webb should both be able to keep their teams in this one for a while, with the bullpens deciding this one. I like the under.
Pick: Under 8.5
Oakland Athletics +110 Los Angeles Angels -130 Total: 10.5
I also like the under in this A's and Angels contest. We saw a combined one run scored by these two on Saturday in a 1-0 win. Although the pitching matchup may look weak on paper, I think both lineups continue to struggle and the under hits.
Pick: Under 10.5
Colorado Rockies +150 San Diego Padres -170 Total: 8.5
I am going to take a shot with the Rockies as the road dog here. Although the Rockies have struggled on the road on the year, they have not been nearly as bad away from home as they were at the start of the season. Austin Gomber of the Rockies should pitch well and give his club a shot and at +150, why not.
Pick: Colorado Rockies +150
Los Angeles Dodgers -230 Arizona Diamondbacks +195 Total: 9.5
I wish I could take the Diamondbacks and all of that plus money, but the Dodgers look to be the play yet again on Sunday. Julio Urias of the Dodgers is the stronger starter in this matchup and the Diamondbacks' Caleb Smith is coming off a start in which he allowed three home runs. I will lay the 1.5 with LAD.
Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers -1.5
Boston Red Sox +110 Tampa Bay Rays -130 Total: 9
Your Sunday Night Baseball game on ESPN provides two teams fighting for the American League East lead. I am going to side with the talented southpaw in the Rays' Shane McClanahan. The Red Sox's Nick Pivetta has gotten hit hard in his last three outings and the Rays should make that four at the Trop.
Pick: Tampa Bay Rays -130
