The Boston Red Sox face the New York Yankees on Thursday, July 15th at Yankee Stadium for game one of a four-game series.
The Red Sox were one of the league's biggest surprises in the first half of the season. The Red Sox lead the AL East with a record of 55-36. Boston has dominated at the plate and the pitching staff has been a lot sharper than what was expected heading into the season. The Red Sox have owned the Yankees this season, winning the first six games against their biggest division rivals. The Red Sox are tied with the second-best record in the American League and will look to hold their division lead with a strong showing in this series.
The Yankees were also a surprise team in the first half of 2021, but for all the wrong reasons. The Bombers are only three games over .500 and are in fourth place, 8.0 games back in the AL East. Underperformers at the plate and on the mound, injuries, and questionable coaching/management decisions have led the Yankees down the wrong path thus far. There is still plenty of baseball left this season, and the Yankees could be the type of team to make a comeback in the standings in the second half.
The Red Sox are projected to bring Eduardo Rodriguez to the mound for this game. Rodriguez has a 6-5 record with a 5.52. Rodriguez's ERA may be steep but he has kept his team competitive in the majority of his starts. The last time Rodriguez faced the Yankees, he had a very strong showing.
The Yankees have not announced an official starter, but it looks like Jordan Montgomery will be the guy on Thursday. Monty has emerged as the #2 starter behind Gerrit Cole in the rotation and will need a strong second half for the Yankees to have a shot at the postseason.
I think the Yankees start the second half of the season strong and win this contest against their rivals. I expect the Yanks to win this series at home and make a push for the playoffs in the American League, perhaps adding a major player at the trade deadline.
