We have a full slate of MLB games on Friday, July 8th, 2021, with all 30 teams scheduled to play. Check out our best picks below, as well as the updated betting odds.
St. Louis Cardinals Chicago Cubs Total:
The Cardinals Wade LeBlanc will make just his fourth start of the season, and they will be in Chicago where they have not won this season. The Cubs have been one of the better teams at home, boasting a 27-15 record at Wrigley Field. With Kyle Hendricks on the mound for the Chicago, runs will be hard to come by for the Cardinals. Not only has he been great at home, but he is also backed by a bullpen that leads the league with a .196 average against. Back the Cubs at Wrigley.
Pick: Chicago Cubs
Chicago White Sox -140 Baltimore Orioles +130 Total: 10
The Orioles are just 3-14 in Jorge Lopez’s starts this season, including losing his last 5. They have not been any better at home this year and will face a hot White Sox lineup that ranks second with a .289 average over the last two weeks. Give me Chicago to cruise to an easy win.
Pick: White Sox -1.5
Atlanta Braves -140 Miami Marlins +130 Total: 7.5
The Marlins Zach Thompson has been electric since joining the rotation, striking out 31 batters in just 24 innings, only allowing 17 hits. Charlie Morton has also pitched well this season for Atlanta, so we should see some good pitching. The edge goes to the Marlins bullpen; they rank 5th with a 3.38 ERA this season and have done a good job limiting the Braves in their previous matchups. Take Miami in this one.
Pick: Miami Marlins +130
Kansas City Royals Cleveland Indians Total:
The Indians have yet to announce a starter but should be able to ride their strong bullpen and piece together a solid outing against the Royals. The Royals have averaged just 3.2 runs over the last 2 weeks and will send out the struggling Brad Keller on Friday; Kansas City is winless in his last 6 starts. Give me Cleveland at home.
Pick: Cleveland Indians
Philadelphia Phillies +120 Boston Red Sox -130 Total: 10.5
The Phillies have not been winning a whole lot of late, but they have been scoring runs. They rank first with 13 home runs and 40 runs over the last seven days. The Red Sox will send out Garret Richards to slow them down, but he has allowed 12 runs over his last 12.1 innings (3 starts), and he has struggled with a 6.75 ERA at home this year. I will take Philadelphia to outslug the Sox here.
Pick: Philadelphia Phillies +120
Pittsburgh Pirates New York Mets Total:
The Pirates have yet to announce a starter for this game and will have to rely in large part on their bullpen. They have not pitched well of late, with a 4.94 ERA over the last two weeks. Meanwhile, the Mets Marcus Stroman has a 2.27 ERA at home. The Mets have not been swinging the bat well but should be able to score some runs off this Pirates staff.
Pick: New York Mets
Toronto Blue Jays Tampa Bay Rays Total:
The Blue Jays have been red hot from the plate, leading the league with a .285 average over the last 30 days. The Rays have also been scoring runs, averaging 5 per game over the last week. With both expected starters showing some cracks to start the season, we should see some scoring here. Take the over.
Oakland Athletics -130 Texas Rangers +120 Total: 9
The Rangers Jordan Lyles got the better of the A’s Cole Irvin last time they pitched, but the A’s were able to come away with the win. Since then, Lyles has allowed just 3 runs over his last 13 innings, and the Rangers are 2-0 in those games. The A’s rank near the bottom of the league with a .235 average over the last month. Take Texas with good value at home.
Pick: Texas Rangers +120
Cincinnati Reds -105 Milwaukee Brewers -105 Total: 8.5
Neither team has been hitting the ball consistently, ranking in the bottom third in average over the last week. We have a good pitching matchup here, with Wade Miley starting for Cincinnati and Milwaukee sending out Eric Lauer. Both are lefties and Milwaukee ranks 30th in average against southpaws, while Cincinnati ranks 26th. Give me the under here.
Pick: Under 8.5
Detroit Tigers +175 Minnesota Twins -195 Total: 9.5
Detroit has come alive from the plate, averaging over 5 runs per game and ranking 6th in average over the last two weeks. The Twins have not lived up to expectations this season, and starter Kenta Maeda allowed 7 hits over 6 innings when these two played in Minnesota earlier in the year. Minnesota’s bullpen has also been unreliable, ranking 26th with a 4.94 ERA this season. Take Detroit in the upset special.
Pick: Detroit Tigers +175
New York Yankees Houston Astros Total:
The Yankees rotations has been hit hard by injuries, and due to their thin staff, they have not announced a starter for this one. Their once potent bullpen has started to show some cracks with a 4.53 ERA over the last week. Houston has cooled off from the plate of late, but still lead the league with a .272 team average. Give me Houston at home.
Pick: Houston Astros
Washington Nationals San Francisco Giants Total:
The Nationals have underachieved this season and have been bad on the road. The Giants on the other hand are 27-13 at home and will send out Logan Webb. He is 2-0 at home with a 1.89 ERA this season. Washington’s starter Paolo Espino allowed 5 hits in 12 at bats with 2 home runs last time he faced this Giants lineup. Take the Giants to get it done.
Pick: San Francisco Giants
Los Angeles Angels -130 Seattle Mariners +120 Total: 9
The Angels Alex Cobb has a 7.77 ERA on the road and was tagged for 5 runs over 7 innings last time he faced the Mariners. Meanwhile, Seattle’s Marco Gonzalez has allowed 9 runs and 3 longballs over his last 9.2 innings. Expect some scoring in this one.
Pick: Over 9
Arizona Diamondbacks Los Angeles Dodgers Total:
Neither team has announced a starter for this one, but it does not matter in this series. The Dodgers have not lost to the Diamondbacks this season. In addition, the Diamondbacks are 10-36 on the road and will play in one of the toughest parks for visitors in Dodgers Stadium. Take the Dodgers no matter what the price is.
Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers
Colorado Rockies +199 San Diego Padres -219 Total: 8.5
San Diego ranks third in the league with a .284 average over the last two weeks while scoring over 5 runs per game. The Padre’s Blake Snell is 3-0 at home with a 1.43 ERA and has not allowed a run in his last two starts. Colorado has scored just 3.1 runs per game over their last 5 heading into Thursday’s action. Give me San Diego.
Pick: San Diego Padres -219
