The Oakland Athletics will host the Detroit Tigers in an AL matchup on Saturday. It will be the third game of a four-game set at the Oakland Coliseum.
Oakland won 3-0 in the last game for their 6th straight win. Frankie Montas got the win in the start, tossing 6 shutout innings with 7 strikeouts. From the dish they had 8 hits and were 2-6 with runners in scoring position. To start he season, the A’s have .216 team batting average and .674 OPS. Jed Lowrie leads the team with a .348 batting average, 2 home runs, and 12 RBI.
Starting for the A’s will be lefty Cole Irvin. To start the season, he is 0-2 with a 7.45 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 5 strikeouts. This will be the first time he has faced this Tigers lineup in his career.
The Tigers lost 3-0, wasting a solid performance from Jose Urena. He tossed 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits. From the dish they managed just 4 hits and failed to get a runner in scoring position in the game. To start the season, the Tigers have a .218 team batting average and .650 OPS. Jeimer Candelario leads the team with a .404 OBP and 8 runs scored.
Getting the start for Detroit Saturday afternoon will be young righty Casey Mize. He has been off to a solid start in 2021, going 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 9 strikeouts. In only his second season, this will be the first time he has faced the A’s, or anyone on their current roster.
The A’s are 7-3 in their last 10 games, 7-3 on the run line, and the under is 5-5.
The Tigers are 4-6 in their last 10 games, 5-5 on the run line, and the under is 6-4.
The A’s are rolling right now but will have to face promising youngster Casey Mize on Saturday. Despite that I still like them here. Irvin has bad numbers so far, but both starts were against Houston so you can expect them to be much better against a Tigers team that ranks at the bottom of the league in batting average against lefties at .182. Detroit's bullpen also has a league worst 7.24 ERA, so Mize would likely have to win this game himself. Give me the A’s to win.
