The Cincinnati Reds will host the St. Louis in the final game of their three game series this Sunday. They split the first two games.
The Cincinnati Reds won the last game 9-6. They jumped out to an early 6-1 lead with a 6 run third inning, chasing out starter Adam Wainwright. It was a lead they never relinquished thanks to an amazing effort at the plate. Outside of the pitcher the entire lineup got in on the hit parade. Tucker Barnhart and Aristides Aquino both homered for the first time this season. The team was red hot with men on, going a collective 5-9 with runners in scoring position. Tyler Mahle got the win in his first start going 5 innings with 2 earned runs and 9 strikeouts. So far this season the Reds offense has a .304 batting average.
Cincinnati will send out Jeff Hoffman to start on Sunday. In 2020 he was 2-1 with a 9.28 ERA, 1.92 WHIP and 20 strikeouts in 21.1 innings of relief work. In spring training he was 0-2 with an 8.5 ERA, 1.5 WHIP and 16 strikeouts.
The St. Louis will look to get back on track after losing the last one. The offense played well, but could not claw all the way back after falling behind early. Adam Wainwright was given the loss. He started but only lasted 2.2 innings, giving up 6 runs on 7 hits. Paul DeJong led the way from the plate going 2-3 with 2 HR, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Nolan Arendao also homered in the game. As a team the Cardinals were 0-6 with runners in scoring position, stranding 7 runners in the game. To start the season St. Louis has a collective .239 batting average.
St. Louis will start veteran righty Carlos Martinez on Sunday. He will look to return to form this year after struggling in 2020. Martinez was 0-3 with a 9.9 ERA in 5 starts. During spring training he was 1-2 with a 5.66 ERA, 1.5 WHIP and 14 strikeouts.
Both of these offenses have been swinging the batt well to start the season. They have scored a combined 32 runs in the first two games. This game will feature two pitchers who struggled last season and during spring training. Both bullpens have been shaky as well. There should be a lot of runs scored again on Sunday. Give me the over.
