The Miami Marlins and Chicago Cubs face off on Wednesday in an MLB wild card showdown at Wrigley Field.
Even with the expanded playoffs were there many that expected the Marlins to make the playoffs this season? The Marlins finished the regular season with a 31-29 record and on the road their record was 16-14. The Marlins offense isn’t really filled with star player’s but this is a team that gets a little help from everyone. Brian Anderson has been the best player for the Marlins hitting 11 home runs and driving in 38 RBI’s.
On the other side of this matchup is the Cubs who got out to a fast start, had a lull during the middle of the season, and then finished the season strong. The Cubs offense hasn’t been great this season, but they have been better against right handed pitchers, and they will be facing a right handed pitcher in this game. Ian Happ has found success this year hitting 12 home runs and driving in 28 RBI’s.
On the mound for the Marlins will be Sandy Alcantara who has pitched 42 innings so far this year and he has an ERA of 3.00. In his last start against the Yankees Alcantara went 7.1 innings giving up six hits and two earned runs.
On the mound for the Cubs will be Kyle Hendricks who had a 2.88 ERA during the regular season. In 11 career starts during the playoffs, Hendricks has a 2.98 ERA.
The Marlins are 7-2 in their last nine playoff games. The under is 16-7-1 in the Cubs last 24 games overall. The under is 9-3-1 in the Cubs last 13 home games. The Marlins are 5-16 in their last 21 meetings in Chicago. The Marlins are 6-18 in their last 24 meetings against the Cubs.
The first day has seen lots of good pitching and that will be the case again in this one. Look for a good old fashioned pitchers duel with very few hits from either team. Back the under to cash in this one.
