The Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox meet in MLB action from Guaranteed Rate Field on Friday.
The Chicago Cubs will look to bounce back after a 7-0 loss to the Pirates on Thursday. Anthony Rizzo and Jason Kipnis each contributed a double to the cause as the only two batters to log a hit in the loss while the rest of the squad batted 0 for 22 with 7 strikeouts. Alec Mills took the loss, falling to 5-5 on the year after allowing four runs on eight hits over 3.2 innings of work. Yu Darvish is expected to start here and is 7-3 with a 2.22 ERA and 88 strikeouts this season. In his career, Darvish is 2-1 with a 4.18 ERA and 38 strikeouts against the White Sox.
The Chicago White Sox will be out to bounce back after letting one slip away following a 5-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins last time out. Nomar Mazara led the White Sox with two RBIs while Yolmer Sanchez had a solo home run and Yasmani Grandal added an RBI to make up the scoring for the White Sox as a team in defeat. Yoan Moncada had a triple and Eloy Jimenez added a double to cap off the offense as Chicago had just four hits as a team in the loss. Dallas Keuchel allowed one run on four hits with three strikeouts, not factoring in the decision. Carlos Rodon took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the year as a result. Dylan Cease will start here and is 5-3 with a 3.52 ERA and 39 strikeouts this season.
The Cubs are 1-5 in their last 6 games overall and 5-1 in their last 6 road games against a team with a winning record while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games following a loss. Chicago is 15-2 in their last 17 home games and 0-5 in their last 5 games overall while the under is 8-2 in their last 10 games against a team with a winning record, The Cubs are 5-2 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams at the White Sox’ ballpark.
I get the Cubs being favored as a veteran squad, but both teams are into the final stretch of the season playing some solid ball and I’m just not prepared to back them in a winner take all kind of spot. I could say the same for the White Sox though, and Cease has actually had some success, even if he didn’t win against the Cubs earlier this season. I think a pitcher’s duel is brewing in this one, so I’’l side with the under as my free pick for this game.
Chris’s Pick Under 8.5
