The Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates meet Wednesday in MLB action at PNC Park.
The Chicago Cubs need a win after losing three of their last four games. The Cubs have scored seven runs in their last three games and three or less runs in five of their last six games. The Cubs have lost five of their last seven games when scoring three or less runs. Ian Happ leads the Cubs with 48 hits and 28 RBI while Willson Contreras and Anthony Rizzo have combined for 85 hits and 45 RBI. Kyle Hendricks gets the ball, and he is 6-4 with a 2.93 ERA and 61 strikeouts this season. Hendricks is 6-7 with a 3.07 ERA and 79 strikeouts in his career against the Pirates.
The Pittsburgh Pirates need a win after losing 13 of their last 15 games. The Pirates have scored four runs in their last three games and three or less runs in six of their last nine games. The Pirates have lost nine of their last 10 games when scoring three or less runs. Erik Gonzalez leads the Pirates with 41 hits and 20 RBI while Josh Bell and Adam Frazier have combined for 80 hits and 37 RBI. Trevor Williams gets the ball, and he is 1-8 with a 6.70 ERA and 45 strikeouts this season. Williams is 3-7 with a 6.09 ERA and 40 strikeouts in his career against the Cubs.
Will update with trends once they're released.
Trevor Williams has allowed 16 earned runs and 22 hits in his last 15.1 innings while Kyle Hendricks has allowed four runs and 22 hits in his last 29.2 innings. Hendricks has been one of the better pitchers in all of baseball in the month of September, while Williams has been fade material all year and has simply had a dreadful month of September. The Pittsburgh Pirates also haven't won back-to-back games since September 6-8, so I doubt last nights walk off victory was a turning point in the final week of the regular season.
I'll take the Cubs and the RL here, as they have clear advantages in this matchup.
