The Baltimore Orioles face the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, September 22nd at Fenway Park for game one of a three-game series.
The Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox had the day off on Monday as they prepare for this three-game set at Fenway Park. The Orioles are coming off a series loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, as the O's dropped all but one game in their five-game series with Tampa. The Orioles are now 23-31 on the year, which puts them in fourth place in the AL East. The Boston Red Sox took down the New York Yankees on Sunday in a dominating 10-2 contest. The Red Sox lost the first two games of that series at home, but the win on Sunday avoided a complete season series sweep by their AL East foes. The Red Sox are now 20-34 on the year, as they remain in dead last in the AL East divisional standings.
The Baltimore Orioles will bring left-hander Keegan Akin to the mound to face the Red Sox. Akin is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA through his first 18.2 innings of the season with the Orioles. Akin tossed 5.0 shutout innings against the Atlanta Braves in his last start on September 16th. Akin also struck out nine batters in that outing, which is very impressive, to say the least.
The Boston Red Sox are set to bring right-hander Nick Pivetta to the bump for Tuesday's contest. Pivetta 0-0 with a 15.88 ERA through his first 5.2 innings of the season. Pivetta will make his Red Sox debut in this game, as he was previously a member of the Philadelphia Phillies, where he struggled in his three appearances.
I am not too sure why the Baltimore Orioles are the underdogs in this spot, as just because the Red Sox beat up the Yankees on Sunday, it does not mean they deserve to be the favorites with a pitcher that has a 15+ ERA. I am going to take the Baltimore Orioles as the road dogs here, as Akin has actually pitched very well for the O's so far this season.
